Comets Point Streak Snapped by Springfield

January 3, 2020 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Utica Comets News Release

Utica, NY - It was a back and forth affair, but the Comets were unable to overcome two one-goal deficits in a 3-2 loss Friday night at the Adirondack Bank Center. Carter Bancks and Sven Baertschi scored for Utica. Zane McIntyre made 32 saves in the loss.

Springfield struck 8:47 into the first period when Joel Lowry beat McIntyre on a two-on-one rush. The Comets threw 14 shots on goal in the opening frame but were unable to break through until Bancks tied the game at one when he put home a rebound from a Wacey Hamilton shot while shorthanded with 0.2 seconds to play in the first.

Jonathan Ang put Springfield back on top with a shorthanded goal of his own with 11:31 to go in the second after a turnover in the Comets' defensive zone. Baertschi tied the game at two at the 17:36 mark of the middle frame, depositing a rebound while sliding on a knee through the slot. Owen Tippett potted a shot with 1.6 seconds to play in the period to give the Thunderbirds a 3-2 lead heading into the intermission.

The Comets had all sorts of chances to tie the game in the third period, but goaltender Sam Montembeault was up to the task. Despite a late power play, the Comets were unable to come up with an equalizer as Springfield's defense shut them down to secure the win.

The Comets go right back at it tomorrow night when they hit the road to take on the Hartford Wolf Pack. Puck drop at the XL Center is at 7 p.m. The game can be heard on 94.9 KROCK and viewed on AHLTV.
