TODAY
After closing 2019 on a high note, the Stockton Heat look to start 2020 on the right foot as they take on the Ontario Reign Friday night at Stockton Arena. The meeting is the front end of a weekend twin bill between the Pacific Division clubs, Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 6 p.m.
Stockton will look to extend its home point streak to a season-best five games with Friday's contest, which would be the first time that the Heat have accomplished that feat since February 26 through March 12 of the 2016-17 season.
OH MY GAWDIN
Glenn Gawdin excelled in the 2019 portion of the season, coming into tonight's game ranked third in the AHL in scoring with 33 points in 30 games played. The second-year pro is on pace to smash his rookie season total of 38 points, and he has already matched his goal output of 11. Gawdin rides a four-game scoring streak into Friday's showdown with Ontario, totaling eight points (3g,5a) in that span. He has found a way onto the score sheet in six of Stockton's last seven games.
EASY Z
Austin Czarnik has been a difference maker for Stockton, boasting the AHL's longest active goal-scoring streak at five games coming into tonight's game. Czarnik, who first came to Stockton on a conditioning stint, has three multi-point games in seven AHL games this season and registered the game-winning, overtime goal in Stockton's last game against Ontario on December 11. Should he light the lamp in tonight's game, Czarnik will surpass Luke Philp for longest goal-scoring streak for Stockton this season.
ON THE DEFENSIVE
As the weather got colder, so have Stockton's opponents on the offensive end. The Heat excelled in their own zone in the month of December, allowing only 25 goals in 10 games and capping the month with the team's first shutout since January of 2018, a 4-0 blanking of the San Jose Barracuda on Tuesday. After a wild first meeting with Ontario this season which the Heat took by an 8-5 final, Stockton has allowed five goals over the last two games against the Reign.
KILL LETHAL AT HOME
Stockton is tied for second in the AHL in penalty killing, limiting opponents to just 13.2-percent on the man-advantage, but the unit takes another step on home ice by killing a league-best 91.5-percent of opponent power plays at Stockton Arena. The Heat have not allowed a power play goal on home ice since December 7 against Bakersfield and have killed 18-straight penalties at home entering tonight's game. In the lone contest against the Reign in Stockton this season, Ontario was held scoreless on three power plays.
ROOKIE ON A RUN
Luke Philp's slow start to the season is well behind him, the rookie coming into tonight's game with points in nine of Stockton's last 11 games. Philp, who leads the AHL in goals since November 11 with 13, has 12 points (9g,3a) over the Heat's last 11 contests and has three points (2g,1a) in three games against Ontario.
