BINGHAMTON - The Binghamton Devils defeated the Cleveland Monsters for their six win in a row on Friday night, 5-2, inside Floyd L. Maines Veterans Memorial Arena.
Binghamton grabbed the early lead, scoring just 1:16 into the first period. Egor Sharangovich logged his third of the season after receiving a chipped pass from Nathan Bastian in the neutral zone. Racing down the ice, Sharangovich surpassed all Monsters defenders and tapped the puck past the left pad of Cleveland goaltender Veini Vehvilainen. The 1-0 tally picked up an additional assist from Dakota Mermis.
Picking up their second goal of the night and of the period, the Devils strengthened their lead to 2-0 late in the first. Nate Schnarr worked the puck down the left side and slid a pass over to Brandon Gignac out in front. Gignac bested Vehvilainen as he fired a shot into the wide-open net for his third goal of the season. In addition to Schnarr's assist, Fabian Zetterlund registered his sixth helper of the season with 4:49 remaining in the first frame.
Shortly after, Binghamton extended their lead to three as Josh Jacobs picked up his third of the season. With 3:28 remaining in the first stanza, a pinball-like play in front of the net resulted in Jacobs picking up his own rebound out in front and lifting it up into the back of the net. Chris Conner and Joey Anderson tallied the assists on the 3-0 Devils play.
The Devils added to the lead just under five minutes into the second period. Chris Conner sent a short pass over to Mikhail Maltsev waiting out in front who fired a one timer into the net to give the Devils a 4-0 lead. The goal was Maltsev's fourth of the year and Conner and Anderson received their second assists of the game.
Cleveland got on the board 6:04 into the second stanza, cutting the Devils lead to 4-1. Calvin Thurkauf registered his fourth goal of the season after he slid the puck past Binghamton netminder Cory Schneider. Adam Clendening and Anton Karlsson added assists on the play and the Devils took a three-goal lead into the final period.
Nine and a half minutes into the final frame, Gignac increased the Devils lead with his second goal of the game and Binghamton's fifth. After some passing around in front of the net, Gignac rocketed a shot from the left-wing circle that slid right under the legs of Vehvilainen. Zetterlund and Bastian were both credited with their second assists of the night on the 5-1 play.
The Monsters made it 5-2 with 7:41 remaining in the third. Clendening, picking up his second assist of the night, shot the puck and it deflected off of Sam Vigneault and by Schneider. Logging the secondary assist on the Cleveland play was Thurkauf. That score held up as the Devils won, 5-2, and Schneider stopped 29 of 31 in the win.
The Devils are back home Sunday as they host Syracuse at 3:05 p.m. Tickets to any seat on Sunday are just $17 until Saturday night at 11:59 p.m.! Tickets are available by calling or texting "TICKETS" to 607-722-7367.
