Toledo Walleye News Release
The Storm's 29-8-6 record gives Toledo 64 points, which places the Storm in first place in the overall ECHL point standings. Toledo's 29 wins ties the Storm with the Peoria Rivermen for the most wins in the league at this time.
Toledo's .744 win percentage is the best in the league.
The Storm picked up the team's 28th and 29th victories this week (4-1 @ Dayton; 5-4 @ Lexington, respectively). With these wins the team surpassed the total number of wins that Toledo had in all of last season, when the Storm had a record of 28-34-10 = 66 pts.
With the win in Dayton over the Bombers last Friday night, the Storm picked up the team's 13th road victory, surpassing the total number of wins that the team had on the road for the entire season last year, when Toledo had a road record of 12-19-5 = 29 pts.
With the win in Lexington over the Men O'War last Saturday, the Storm ran the team's road record to 14-6-2 = 30 pts, thus surpassing the total number of points that the team picked up on the road for the entire year last season (12-19-5 = 29 pts). After the loss in Peoria on Sunday, the Storm's current road record is 14-7-2 = 30 pts.
The Storm extended the team's season-high unbeaten streak to ten games (6-0-4) by winning the first two games this week. That streak was snapped with the 5-2 loss to Peoria on Sunday.
With the wins in Dayton and Lexington this week, the Storm extended the team 's season-high unbeaten road streak to seven games (6-0-1). That streak was also ended with the 5-2 loss in Peoria on Sunday.
Toledo has only been beaten in regulation twice in the nineteen games that the team has played since December 14, 2002 (13-2-4). Both of the losses in this time period came to the Peoria Rivermen at Carver Arena in Peoria, Illinois.
In the two wins that the Storm had this week, Toledo scored the game's first goal. The Storm has a record of 23-1-4 when scoring first this season.
In the 4-1 win over Dayton on Friday night, Mike Bayrack scored the game's first goal at 19:39 of the first period. That was Bayrack's tenth goal of the season for the Storm, and four of those were the first goals scored in the games in which they were scored.
Tim Verbeek scored the Storm's second goal on Friday night at 7:30 of the second period came 22 seconds after Dayton scored to tied things at one and served to help shift the momentum back in favor of the Storm. Verbeek did pretty much the same thing on Saturday night when he scored at the 6:20 mark of the second period-a minute and 38 seconds after Lexington had scored their second goal to tie the game at two-again shifting the game's momentum back in favor of the Storm.
Tim Verbeek's goal on Friday night-the second for the Storm-turned out to be the game winner in the 4-1 win over Dayton. That was Verbeek's second game winning goal of the season for the Storm.
Jeff Johnstone scored the Storm's third goal on Friday night eighteen seconds into the third period, while the Storm was on the power play. Johnstone also scored the Storm's first third-period goal on Saturday night to give the team a 4-2 lead 3:23 into the period. (He also assisted on the first two goals for the Storm on Saturday night-his third three-point game of the season and fifth multi-point performance.) Johnstone's goals in the first two games this week extended his personal goal-scoring streak to five and six games, respectively. This streak was ended in Peoria on Sunday. Johnstone's six game goal-scoring streak is a team season-high for the Storm.
Alexandre Jacques scored the Storm's fourth goal in the 4-1 win over Dayton on Friday night. That was Jacques fourth goal in four games for the Storm. Jacques also picked up an assist on Jeff Johnstone's power play goal in that game. That marked the ninth multi-point performance of the season for Jacques. In Friday's game, Jacques played at a (+1), and over the three games this week for the Storm, he played at a collective (+3). Overall, Jacques is currently playing at a (+29), which is the fifth best (+/-) in the league.
Nick Parillo assisted on both third period goals by the Storm on Friday night and was selected as the game's first star. That marked Parillo's tenth multi-point performance for the Storm. (He also scored two goals in last Tuesday's ECHL All-Star game.) Parillo also scored the Storm's second goal on Saturday night (with just 1.5 seconds remaining in the first period to give Toledo a 2-0 lead over Lexington). Parillo currently has 15 goals and 24 assists (39 points) in 38 games with the Storm, placing him tied for sixth place in the ECHL's rookie scoring race.
The winning goaltender for the Storm on Friday night was Doug Teskey, who stopped 22 of the 23 shots that he saw that night. That was Teskey's nineteenth win of the season and the fifth time this season that he has held the opposition to one goal or less. The win in Dayton also extended a personal unbeaten streak for Teskey to eleven games (9-0-2), a streak that was ended in Peoria on Sunday. Teskey's nineteen wins places him tied for third in that category amongst goaltenders in the ECHL.
Toledo fired a season high 51 shots on Dayton goaltender, Shane Bendera, on Friday night. That established a season-high for shots on goal for the Storm, who currently average 35.23 shots on goal per game-which is more than any other team in the league.
The Storm outshot the Bombers 51-23 on Friday night. Toledo has a record of 17-3-5 when outshooting the opponent.
The Storm's first goal on Saturday night-the first of the game-was scored by Paul Ballantyne at 14:16 of the first period. That was Ballantyne's fourth goal of the season-and the second time this season that he has scored the game's first goal. Ballantyne also assisted on the game winning goal (by Darryl Bootland at 12:47 of the third period). That was Ballantyne's second multi-point game of the season.
Darryl Bootland scored the game winning goal for the Storm on Saturday night at 12:47 of the third period, while the Storm was on the power play. That was Bootland's thirteenth goal of the season; his third game winner; and his fourth power play goal of the season. Bootland also assisted on the Storm's third goal of the game, making this his eighth multi-point performance of the season (and his seventh in his last seventeen games).
The winning goaltender for the Storm on Saturday night was Mike Minard, who stopped 34 of the 38 shots that he saw on the evening. He also came on in substitution of Doug Teskey at the 14:57 mark of the second period in the 5-2 loss in Peoria on Sunday and stopped all eight shots he faced in the 25:03 he played in that game. Minard remains unbeaten as a member of the Storm (2-0-2).
The Storm was outshot by a total of 38-25 on Saturday night, and Toledo was also outshot by Peoria on Sunday, 29-26. The Storm has a record of 12-5-1 when getting outshot by the opponent.
In Sunday's 5-2 loss to Peoria, the Storm gave up four second period goals to the Rivermen. That marked the first time this season that the Storm allowed as many as four goals against in a single period. (Prior to this game, the Storm had given up as many as three in a period on five separate occasions.)
The nine total goals that the Storm allowed in Friday and Saturday night's games marked a season high for goals against in consecutive games this season. The Storm currently has a team goals against of 2.84, which is fifth in the league.
Doug Teskey started in goal for the Storm on Sunday and made 16 saves on 21 shots in 34:57. He was pulled in favor of Mike Minard after Peoria's fifth goal at 14:57 of the second period. This marked the fifth time this season that the Storm has made a goaltender substitution during a game; but only the second time that Teskey has been removed from a game.
Peoria's second goal on Sunday was scored while the Rivermen were short-handed. That was the fifth short-handed goal that the Storm has allowed this season which is tied for the fourth lowest in that category in the ECHL.
Jeff Mitchell scored the Storm's first goal on Sunday (to make it 1-4 at 11:35 of the second period-ten seconds after Peoria had gone up 4-0). That was Mitchell's first goal for the Storm since November 15, a span of 27 games for the Storm (but only twelve for Mitchell, as he was on the injured reserve for a span of 15 games, from December 8 through January 16).
The Storm's second goal on Sunday was scored by Wes Mason at 18:39 of the second period, while the Storm was on the power play. That was Mason's ninth goal of the season for Toledo, and his fourth scored on the power play. Mason also assisted on Jeff Mitchell's goal earlier in the period, making this his third multi-point performance of the season.
Toledo scored at least one power play goal in each of the three games played this week: (1-8 @ Dayton; 2-8 @ Lexington; and 1-6 @ Peoria). The two PP goals against Lexington marked the first time in six games that the Storm had scored more than one power play goal in a single game. Overall, the Storm power play has now connected for 44 goals in 259 chances, a 17.0% scoring ration, which is 14th in the league.
The Storm PK allowed at least one power play goal against in each of the three games this week: (4-5 @ Dayton; 5-6 @ Lexington; and 3-5 @ Peoria). Overall, the Storm has allowed 43 power play goals against in 252 chances for the opponent, an 82.9% kill ratio, which is eighth in the league.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK NOMINATION:
Jeff Johnstone (2 goals - 2 assists = 4 points, +1, 1 ppg)
Jeff Johnstone continued his hot hand this week, scoring a couple of goals and picking up a couple of assists in the three games this week. He extended a personal goal scoring streak to five games, when he scored the Storm's third goal in the 4-1 win over Dayton on Friday night. That goal was scored 18 seconds into the third period while the Storm was on the power play. Jeff followed that up by extending his scoring streak to a team-high six games when he scored the Storm's fourth goal at 3:23 of the third period. Jeff also assisted on the first two goals of that game for his third three-point performance of the season.
