Gulls Split Series In Bako

January 27, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - Some two points separate three teams in the West Coast Hockey League standings. The Idaho Steelheads are way ahead of the pack, but the battle for second place just got a little more interesting.

The San Diego Gulls (25-13-1) gained two points after splitting a weekend series in Bakersfield, but still lost ground. The Condors took Friday's game 5-1 and gained a valuable shootout point in Saturday's 3-2 Gulls triumph. Put that together with the Fresno Falcons' domination over the Anchorage Aces last weekend, and you've got race Indianapolis would be proud of.

So here's a look at the standings - second through fourth: San Diego - 51 points; Bakersfield - 50 points; Fresno - 49 points. Will it get any easier for the Gulls? Well... they play two in Boise this weekend and a pair in Fresno next week. At least the Blue and Orange control its own destiny.

But don't forget, San Diego has lost only three times in its last 20 games. And the Gulls still have four games in hand against the Steelheads, so a couple of wins this weekend can really put them in contention.

San Diego has had its troubles against winning teams this season, going a combined 11-11-1 (Idaho, Bakersfield and Fresno). Most of those losses came at the beginning of the season, however, before the Gulls really took off.

NOTES: Trevor Koenig needs two more wins for 100 in his WCHL career. He needs nine more for 100 in his Gulls tenure... The Gulls are 14-2 against teams below .500 (Long Beach and Anchorage)... Sylvain Deschatelets has 13 points (5g, 8a) in his last five games...

TRANSACTIONS:

Kevin Grant remains on injured reserve... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera still remain with the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears...

RECAP:

Gulls 1 @, CONDORS 5; Friday, Jan.24: Bakersfield got two early goals and Kevin St. Pierre did the rest, ending San Diego's four-game winning streak. Jason Ralph and Shawn Byram got the Condors started, putting them up 2-0 in the first. Dan Cousineau netted his first of the season in the second period, but Bakersfield shut the door from there and took care of business with three more tallies in the third.

GULLS 3 @ Condors 2 (SO); Saturday, Jan. 25: Koenig was perfect in the shootout period, out-dueling St. Pierre, and gave San Diego a 3-2 come-from-behind victory. Bakersfield carried a 2-1 edge going into the third period, but Deschatelets evened it up midway through the frame. Koenig stopped all five shooters in the extra period to St. Pierre's four. The Gulls are now 1-10 when trailing after two periods this season.
