Bombers Kick off Five-Game Homestand with Three-Game Weekend

January 27, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release

BOMBERS KICK OFF FIVE-GAME HOMESTAND WITH THREE-GAME WEEKEND: The Dayton Bombers will play their first games against non-divisional foes since before Christmas when they kick off a five-game homestand this weekend against Mississippi, Roanoke, and Trenton.

Below is a review of this past weekend's Bombers' East Coast Hockey League games:

1/24/03- Toledo 1 @ BOMBERS 4

A team season-high 7,091 fans came to the Nutter Center for "Beach Party" Night. However, the Bombers, with a lineup missing six regulars, fell to Toledo by a score of 4-1. Veteran defenseman/center Bill McCauley returned to the Bombers for a game and assisted on Brian Cummings' deflection power play goal at 7:08 of the second period to tie the score at one, but Tim Verbeek put the Storm ahead for good 22 seconds later. Jeff Johnstone (PP), Alexander Jacques, and Mike Bayrack also tallied for Toledo, which outshot the Bombers 51-23. Added just prior to the game, defenseman Jan Tabacek also assisted on Cummings' score.

1/25/03- BOMBERS 0 @ Johnstown 3

Peter Aubry made 26 saves and Jim Leger recorded a goal and an assist as the Johnstown Chiefs topped the Dayton Bombers 3-0 at the Cambria County War Memorial in Johnstown, Pennsylvania. Mike Rodrigues' first goal of the season gave Johnstown a 1-0 lead at 10:47 of the first period. Leger's breakaway tally at 6:53 of the second and Brent Bilodeau's power play marker 2:48 later gave Johnstown all the offense it needed. Still missing their top three goal and point scorers in addition to two top defenseman, the Bombers were unable to convert on 12 power play opportunities.

BOMBERS ANNOUNCE SPECIAL $5 RATE FOR ALL COLLEGE STUDENTS AND FANS 18 AND UNDER: For the rest of the 2002-2003 regular season, fans 18 and under as well as all college students who present a valid student ID can purchase a silver game ticket for $5. "We were looking for a way to continue attracting young people to our games. This special rate we believe satisfies that goal," said Dayton Bombers' General Manager Ed Gingher.

TREVOR ETTINGER ''BOBBLEHEADS'' UP FOR SALE: As a result of an incredible demand from those who may not be able to attend "Trevor Ettinger Bobblehead" Night on March 28, 2003, the Dayton Bombers will be enabling fans to purchase the doll for a limited time only. This special offer for those unable to make it to Trevor Ettinger "Bobblehead" Night expires February 7, 2003 to insure extra "Bobbleheads." The cost for the Trevor Ettinger "Bobblehead" Doll for out-of-town followers or those who have previous commitments is $20, plus $5 shipping and handling (if applicable). Fans can order by contacting the Bombers at (937) 775-4747 or my emailing the team at hockey@daytonbombers.com. "Even with his promotion to AHL Syracuse, Trevor Ettinger has remained a popular figure here in Dayton," said Dayton Bombers General Manager/Alternate Governor Ed Gingher. "Having received so many requests for his Bobblehead from as far as Nova Scotia (Canada) and Syracuse (New York), we felt the need to cater to his fans by presenting this offer." Forward Trevor Ettinger, current Syracuse Crunch enforcer and one of nine different Bombers to be beckoned by the American Hockey League this season, has been a fan favorite since his original arrival to Dayton last season. Faithful followers of Ettinger have kept tabs on his progress with the Crunch, the Bombers' AHL affiliate and the AHL affiliate of the NHL's Columbus Blue Jackets. Due to the tremendous interest regarding the Trevor Ettinger "Bobblehead" Doll, the Bombers earlier this month increased the amount to be given away from 1000 to 2000 and rescheduled the event to Fan Appreciation Night at the team's last regular season home game. The Bombers will be hosting the Peoria Rivermen for a 7:30 p.m. tilt on March 28, 2003.

BOMBERS' UPCOMING GAMES THIS WEEK:

Friday, January 31, 2003 vs. Mississippi Sea Wolves (7:30 p.m.)

The Bombers will have their second annual "Single Source News" Singles Night at this game. Fans will be entertained by Single Source News staff writer Jim Bucher during the intermissions. Several lucky fans will win gift packages, courtesy of Single Source News. Packages will include a wide variety of theatre tickets, dinner passes, and more from numerous area establishments. Immediately following the game, singles will be invited to attend a party at a local area nightspot to be announced during the game. The Bombers will be playing a Southern Conference team for the first time during the 2002-2003 regular season at this game. The Bombers were 2-0 against Southern Conference teams during the 2001-2002 campaign. The Bombers are 3-0 against the Sea Wolves in the previous head-to-head meetings.

Saturday, February 1, 2003 vs. Roanoke Express (7:30 p.m.)

The Bombers, who were 6-1 against the Express (and 3-0 on home ice) in 2001-2002, will play their first and only meeting of the 2002-2003 campaign against Perry Florio's squad, which enters the week third in the ECHL's Northeast Division (27-17-3, 57 PTS).

Sunday, February 2, 2003 vs. Trenton Titans (6:00 p.m.)

The Bombers will host Trenton for the first time this season at another Kids' Club Sunday, presented by Capn' Bogey's. Also at this game, Jaffe & Gross- The Jewelry Company in downtown Dayton will be hosting "Who's Got the Real Diamond? ... The Search Continues!" Night. Earlier this season, 500 ladies received a stone packet from Jaffe & Gross- The Jewelry Company (461-9450) during an in-game promotion. One of those 500 ladies was lucky enough to receive a free Round Brilliant Cut 1/2 carat diamond. However, somewhat mysteriously, the diamond still has not been found and, therefore, a winner has not yet been unearthed! At "Who's Got the Real Diamond? ... The Search Continues Night," Jaffe & Gross- The Jewelry Company will have a mini jewelry display (focusing on but not limited to heart motif designs) on the Nutter Center concourse as fans prepare for their Valentine's Day shopping. Jaffe & Gross will also have diamond testers at the game. Should no lady who received a stone step forward as a winner in the preceding games of the weekend homestand (Friday, January 31 vs. Mississippi and Saturday, February 1 vs. Roanoke), Jaffe & Gross- The Jewelry Company will have their testers at the game to help determine a winner. In addition to the "jewelry" promotion, the Bombers will be recognizing Dayton area youth hockey teams as well as area boy scout troops. If your area youth hockey program has yet to register, please contact Bombers' Assistant Director of Promotions and Game Operations Gordy Haggard at 775-4732. If your area boy scout troop has yet to register, please contact Bombers' Season Ticket and Group Sales Manager Mike Flanagan at 775-4751. The Bombers are 0-2 against Trenton this season. Both of the previous games were played at the Sovereign Bank Arena in Trenton, New Jersey. The Bombers beat Trenton 2-1 at the Nutter Center on March 2, 2002 in the teams' lone head-to-head clash last season. The Bombers will host Trenton one more time this season on Tuesday, March 18 at 6:15 p.m. ("Family Fun" Day- Kids can get in for free). The Bombers will be having a free pre-game skate from 4:00-5:00 p.m at this game.
