
Komets Take Three Wins, Six Points

Fort Wayne, IN --- For the 6th straight week the Komets maintain the top spot in the UHL Eastern Conference. The K's won all 3 games played improving to 26-13-6 and 58 points. The Komets enjoy a 4-point lead over 2nd place Adirondack and a 6-point margin over 3rd place Elmira after taking the Jackals in both games of a weekend doubleheader in Fort Wayne. The Komets have 3 games in hand over the Jackals as well entering the 17th week of the season.
The 16th week of the season started with a 5-2 Fort Wayne victory at Rockford Wednesday night as netminder Tom Lawson earned his 16th win of the season stopping 24 of 26 IceHog shots. It was the 3rd straight win over the IceHogs. The Komets are 4-1-1 vs Rockford this season with 4 meetings remaining.
The Elmira Jackals came to town for a 2-game visit Friday and Saturday nights. The Komets swept the weekend series taking the Jackals 5-1 Friday and 5-2 Saturday. Center Colin Chaulk netted a pair in Friday's win while center Bobby Stewart had a 4-point night (2g, 2a) Saturday. Goalie Tom Lawson filled the Komet nets for both games allowing 3 goals on 51 shots faced in the 2 outings.
The Komets hit the road for 4 games over the next 2 weeks before their next home game Saturday, Feb. 8 against the Kalamazoo Wings. The Komets skate at Kalamazoo Wednesday night at 7:00 and visit the Flint Generals Friday for a 7:30pm faceoff. This weekend the Komets have a rare Saturday and Sunday off.

It's a new Komet record.....Kelly Perrault set a new Komet UHL record of assists by a defenseman in a single season with 42 when he earned a helper on Colin Chaulk's first goal Friday night, Jan. 24, in a 5-1 win over Elmira. Frederic Bouchard previously held the record with 41 set during the 1999-00 season.
It's a Boy!.....perhaps Kelly Perrault's best assist ever was realized yesterday afternoon, Sunday, Jan. 26 at 2:30 when he and his wife, Jennifer, welcomed their new baby boy to the world. Ethan Perrault weighed in at 8 pounds, 7 ounces. It's the first child for the Perraults. Baby, Mom and Dad are reportedly doing fine.
Streaking Komets.....Kelly Perrault has a 4-game point streak (2g, 3a).....Colin Chaulk is riding a 4-game point streak (4g, 2a).....Bobby Stewart has points in 4 straight games (4g, 5a) and a 4-game assist streak (5a).....Michel Massie has a 3-game point streak (3g, 1a).....Ryan Severson has a 3-game point streak (1g, 2a).
Komets of the week: Center Bobby Stewart gets the nomination for UHL Player of the Week scoring 3 goals (1 shg, 1 gwg) and 4 assists for a 7-point week. Tom Lawson gets the nomination for UHL Goaltender of the Week after starting all 3 games of the week earning 3 wins, allowing 5 goals for a 1.67 goals against average, stopping 72 of 77 shots for a .935 save percentage. In addition to his 3 straight wins last week, Lawson is unbeaten in regulation 5 straight and has had 4 straight starts.
Scanning the stats.....Tom Lawson leads UHL goaltenders with 1.91 average, 5 shutouts and .923 save percentage.....defenseman Jake Ortmeyer leads UHL rookies with +15.....Kelly Perrault leads UHL defensemen with 42 assists, 48 points and 162 shots.....the Komets lead the UHL with 54 power play goals (T-Quad City, Flint).....the Komets lead the UHL with an overall penalty kill of 85.4% (35 power play goals allowed in 239 times shorthanded).....the Komets have the fewest shorthanded goals against with 5.....the Komets lead in fewest goals against with 116 and 2.58 per game.....the Komets lead the UHL in 3-goal games with 15 (11-4-0).
Good Luck Fireman Selleke....Saturday night's 5-2 home win over Elmira was announced as winger Jason Selleke's last pro game. Selleke has been accepted to the Indianapolis Fire Department and will leave the Komets for his new career as an Indy Fireman. The Ohio State graduate had been with the Komets since the start of the season accumulating 10 goals, 10 assists and 108 penalty minutes in 42 games. Selleke, who just turned 26 Sunday, Jan. 26, was in his 3rd pro year after skating the last 2 seasons with Indianapolis in the Central Hockey League.
January attendance.....the Komets enjoyed the best monthly attendance ever since joining the UHL in 1999. In 6 home games 44,198 fans turned out for Komet home games for a 7,366 per game average. The Komets continue to lead the UHL in attendance on the season with a total attendance of 155,286 after 22 Fort Wayne games for a 7,058 per game average on the year so far.
Milestones: 3 markers fell Wednesday during the Komet's 5-2 win at Rockford; winger David-Alexandre Beauregard dished his 400th pro point, defenseman Troy Neumeier skated his 500th career game (North America) and Dustin Virag appeared in his 100th game as a Komet.
On the edge.....Colin Chaulk has 99 career goals.....Troy Neumeier has 96 pro points.
Komet sightings....Tuesday, Jan. 28, Icy will make an appearance at the Red Cross Blood Drive around 5pm. Saturday, Feb. 1, Bobby Stewart and Tom Lawson will visit Clem's Collectibles in Glenbrook Mall from 1pm to 2pm to meet and greet Komet fans.
Muhammad Ali visits Komets Feb. 8.....former Boxing Champion of the World Muhammad Ali will make a special appearance Saturday, Feb. 8 when the Komets host the Kalamazoo Wings at 7:35pm. The Champ will be on hand to spend some quality time with local children facing their own fights against life threatening illnesses and to help recognize all of the "A" students in attendance as part of the Comcast annual Report Card Night at Komet Hockey. A portion of the ticket sales that night will be donated to various children's charities by the Komets and select corporate partners.
