Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska – The Anchorage Aces will be holding practice tomorrow and Wednesday at Sullivan Arena from 10:00 a.m.-Noon in an attempt to regroup in time for a tough series at Bakersfield this weekend.

The third-place Condors (22-12-6 overall) are unbeaten in their last seven games, a streak that began with a 6-4 victory over Anchorage at Centennial Garden January 11, when Danielle Dube became only the third female goaltender ever to win a professional hockey game. The Aces (10-31-2), meanwhile, can tie the WCHL record for consecutive losses in a single season if they come up on the short end of Friday night's game at 6:00 p.m. AST, with the same starting time in effect for Saturday's tilt. Tucson currently holds that mark with an 11-game slide during the 1997-98 campaign, while Colorado dropped 14 in a row over two seasons (10 at the end of 1998-99, four to begin the 1999-2000 season).

Anchorage returns home for Tuesday and Wednesday night games at 7:00 p.m. February 4-5. The "Amazing Rhythm Aces," a Grammy-winning band in the 1970's hailing from Nashville, will be performing during both intermissions of Wednesday's contest. All games are broadcast live on KFQD 750 AM and at www.anchorageaces.com or www.kfqd.com, with Jack Michaels calling the play-by-play. Coverage begins 20 minutes prior to the opening face-off, presented by GCI.

Paul Williams had an assist on B.J. Young's power play goal in the third period of last Wednesday's 4-2 loss to Fresno, becoming only the fourth (and presumably the last) player in WCHL history to reach the 500-point plateau. The all-time leading scorer in the history of the WCHL, Dean Larson, currently leads the league in scoring with 52 points and has 752 for his career after scoring his 21st goal of the year in that same game.

Former Ace Keith Street retired in 2001 but still ranks third on the career list with 507 points. Former Colorado/Fresno standout Craig Lyons is the only other WCHL player to reach 500, having signed in Long Beach last week and moving up to 591 over the weekend, second behind only Larson in league history. Williams also ranks second in goals scored with 232, a number that trails only Larson's 252.

Despite drawing nearly 8,000 fans to Sullivan Arena over the weekend, Anchorage saw Fresno complete the three-game sweep with 3-2 and 9-2 wins. Young scored twice in Saturday's lopsided defeat while Jason Boily scored his first professional goal and Yvan Corbin notched his 22nd in Friday's setback. Corbin trails only Idaho's Marty Flichel (who has 25) in the WCHL goal-scoring race.

Young, Kimbi Daniels, and goaltender Christian Soucy will be among six players participating in the "Skate-into-Reading" program tomorrow at 1:30 p.m. at Ravenwood Elementary School. Corbin, Larson, Boily, and Williams will be among the six players heading to Lake Otis Elementary School for the same program Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. The Aces' mascot, Boomer, will be appearing at the West Chester Lagoon Mascot Day Saturday, February 1, from 1:00-4:00 p.m. Looking ahead, the Aces will be holding their annual Dimond Center "Skate with the Aces" Sunday, February 23 from 2:30-4:30 p.m. For more information regarding tickets, appearances, or upcoming games, please call (907) 258-ACES.
