Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - After losing the last two games played to Bakersfield in California, the West Coast Hockey League's first place Idaho Steelheads (31-10-3, 65 points) redeemed themselves with a 3-2 win over the Condors before 4,248 on home ice Monday night.

The power play made all the difference with four of the five goals coming with a one-man advantage. Left Winger Dampy Brar made an impressive debut at the Bank of America Centre scoring 2 goals and 1 assist.

The first power play opportunity offered up the only goal of the first period for the Idaho Steelheads when Brar scored on a beautiful pass from Adam Copeland at 7:12. Scott Swanson, who leads the league in assists (37), also recorded a point on the tally.

Likewise, Bakersfield capitalized on their first power play. At 4:51 of the second period, Jason Ralph tipped one past Cugnet to tie the game on a pass from Paul Rosebush, also assisted by Jason Jackman. Brar got his second of the night on the only even-strength goal, to give the Steelheads the one-goal lead again at 11:21. Ben Keup recorded the assist.

Heading into the third period, the Steelheads were up 2-1 until A.J. Begg gave them a two-goal lead. The puck went off Bakersfield goalie Kevin St. Pierre's stick and trickled in over his shoulder. Derek Paget and Dampy Brar assisted on the goal. Shawn Byram gave the Condors some hope when he closed the gap to within one goal with a power play goal at 16:30 of the third (Jeff Goldie, Guy Dupuis). However, with St. Pierre out of the net for the final minute of play, the Steelheads defense and goalie Jason Cugnet kept the Condors at bay. Cugnet improved his record to 24-9-1 for the league-lead in wins.

Bakersfield is the only team who has beaten the Steelheads on home ice this season, ending a 13-game undefeated streak on December 2, 2002.

The two teams match up again on Wednesday night for Blair Allison bobblehead night. Puck drops at 7:05 p.m.
