Komets lead UHL with 4 weeks to go

Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets finished another successful week earning 4 points in 3 games played to continue to lead the UHL with 36 wins and 79 points after 21 weeks of the 2002-03 campaign. 14 games and 4 weeks of the regular season remain before post-season play. 7 home games and 7 road games remain as the Komets skate those 14 games in 26 nights to close out the month of March and the regular season.

Besides wins and points, the Komets also top the UHL with .637 point percentage. The Komet's defense is the stingiest allowing the lowest goals against at 156, lowest shots allowed at 1,490, and an overall penalty kill of 269/316 for a success rate of 85.1%.

The games (2-1-0): Friday night the Komets doubled up the visiting Rockford IceHogs 4-2 as Pokey Reddick returned from his long absence on IR since Dec. 14. Reddick earned his 98th career Fort Wayne win stopping 17 of 19 IceHog shots. Bobby Stewart scored his 8th game winner of the season to break the Komets record of 7 in a UHL season set by Jason Goulet during the 1999-00 season. It was the Komet's 5th straight win over Rockford to lead the series 6-1-1. 2 meetings remain as the Komets and Rockford will finish the season with a home-and-home set March 29 and 30.....Saturday the Komets blasted the Muskegon Fury 5-1 on coliseum ice. Tom Lawson picked up his 25th win of the season, 1 shy of the record of 26 Fort Wayne wins in a UHL season set by Doug Teskey during the 2000-01 season.....Sunday the Komets dropped a 4-1 decision in their last visit of the regular season to Port Huron. The Komets topped the Beacons 6-3 in their last meeting in Fort Wayne Jan. 11 and have one regular season meeting remaining March 15 in Fort Wayne.

This week.....the Komets start the week with their final eastern road trip of the season. The Komets are at Adirondack Wednesday at 7pm. Thursday the Komets skate at Elmira at 7pm. The Komets finish the week at home Saturday against the Flint Generals at 7:35pm.

U-Leaders.....Kelly Perrault leads defensemen with 215 shots, 49 assists and 57 points.....Bobby Stewart leads with 8 game winners.....Tom Lawson leads goaltenders with a 1.96 goals-against average and 6 shutouts.....Jake Ortmeyer leads UHL rookies with +25.....the Komets have the best penalty kill in the league with a success rate of 85.1% (269/316), the stingiest defense with the lowest goals against per game average of 2.52 and fewest shots against per game of 1,490 or 24.03 per game, and the Komets have surrendered the fewest short handed goals at 8.

Komets to honor Bob Chase Saturday.....Bob Chase will be honored for his 50 years of broadcasting radio rinkside this Saturday night when the Komets host the Flint Generals. Chase will become the 24th inductee into the Fort Wayne Komets Hall of Fame and the only member of the class of 2002-03 during a ceremony at center ice prior to the 7:35pm faceoff. Chase first began broadcasting Komet games during the 1953-54 season and has described Komet hockey over the radio for the past 5 decades. National Hockey League TV play-by-play announcer and former Fort Wayne area native Mike Emrick will return home for the festivities. Emrick, who followed Chase while growing up in the area in the 1960's and 1970's, currenlty announces Television play-by-play for Fox Sports Net and the New Jersey Devils.
