BOISE, Idaho - The heat is on as the West Coast Hockey League teams come down the stretch and position for playoff spots. Currently, the first place Idaho Steelheads are assured a ticket to the playoffs, but the seed rankings are still up for grabs.

If the current standings stick, Idaho (42-12-4, 88) just had a look at their first round against the defending Taylor Cup champion Fresno Falcons this past weekend. The Falcons (30-21-6, 66) are in fourth spot; 9 points back from second place San Diego (36-18-3, 75) and 7 back from third place Bakersfield (32-16-9, 73).

The two teams played a tough and exciting three-game weekend series with the Steelheads winning two of three. Friday night's contest ended in a 3-2 shootout win in favor of Idaho. Saturday night the Steelheads squeaked by Fresno with a 6-5 victory. Idaho was dealt their second regulation loss at home this season in Sunday night's matchup with a 5-2 defeat to the Falcons.

Practice Schedule: The Steelheads will practice Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday this week at the Bank of America Centre from 10:00am - 11:30am. Friday and Saturday they will have a pre-game skate from 10:00am - 11:00 am.

Up next: The Steelheads play the Bakersfield Condors for a two-game weekend series at the Bank of America Centre, Friday, March 7th and Saturday, March 8th. Both games start at 7:05 pm.

Sizzling D: Defenseman Scott Swanson leads the Steelheads in points and is fifth in the league with 64. He is also tops in the league in assists with 56.

Notable Honors: For the third week in a row, the Steelheads have been voted the top minor league team in the nation by In The Crease online magazine.

In the Community: Steelheads players are visiting elementary schools across the Treasure Valley this week for Read Across America Week. If media would like directions to schools to cover any of these events, please call Bonnie for directions:

Monday, March 3rd from 1- 3 pm- Rivervalley Elementary in Boise Jonathan Shockey and Blair Allison will kick off reading week a school assembly.

Tuesday, March 4th 1-3 pm- Amity Elementary and McPherson Elementary in Boise. Jason Cugnet and A.J. Begg will be reading to children in several classrooms.

Wednesday, March 5th, 1-3pm- Linder Elementary in Meridian. Jeremy Mylymok and Derrick Atkinson will be reading to children in several classrooms.

Wednesday, March 5th, 1-3pm -Ronald Reagan Elementary in Nampa Ben Keup and Scott Burt will be reading to children in several classrooms.

Thursday, March 6th, 1:30-3pm -Franklin Roosevelt Elementary in Nampa Dan Shermerhorn and Rory McDade will be reading to children in several classrooms.

The Steelheads deliver hot meals to homebound citizens every Monday for the Meals on Wheels program.
