Greensboro Generals News Release

UPCOMING WEEK: The Greensboro Generals have a very strange week ahead of them. They have three games in three nights in three cities on the three unlikeliest days of the week. The Generals' final home game in over three weeks is tonight at 7:00 in their one and only matchup of the season with the Cincinnati Cyclones. The game, originally scheduled for this past Saturday, will feature a Monday Night Football flavor, with Antoine Calloway, Demeco Archangel, and Shannon Gainey of the Greensboro Prowlers on hand to sign autographs for fans. The game will also feature a chance to win an autographed football from Cleveland Browns offensive lineman and former North Carolina A&T graduate Qasim Mitchell. Immediately following the game, Greensboro embarks on a franchise record eight game road trip. They will open the Atlantic Coast trek against the Trenton Titans on Tuesday night at 7:05. From there, it's off to Atlantic City for a battle with the first place Boardwalk Bullies at 7:05 on Wednesday. After the three games, the Generals will be treated to a full weekend off. All games this season can be heard on WPET AM-950 and online at www.greensborogenerals.com..

LAST WEEK:

2/27 AUGUSTA 1, GREENSBORO 3 ¨ After not scoring against Augusta for nearly 100 minutes dating back to a 1-0 shootout defeat last Sunday, Greensboro finally was able to solve Lynx goaltender Tom Draper to earn the victory. Trailing 1-0 in the second period, Mark Turner banged home a rebound of a Geno Parrish shot to even the score. The play of the game came from Jay Murphy, scoring the eventual game-winning goal with five seconds left in the second period by batting down a clearing attempt out of midair in the slot and drilling a slap shot past Draper. Bryan Richardson added a valuable insurance goal midway through the third period, while Daniel Berthiaume picked up a well earned victory with a 36 save effort.

2/28 COLUMBIA 4, GREENSBORO 5 (OT) ¨ Greensboro's "Pack the House" night crowd saw the Generals wear special Carolina Monarchs jerseys and perhaps the most entertaining game of the season. In front of a franchise record 11,374 fans, the Generals didn't get off to a good start, allowing two Inferno goals in the first eight minutes of the game. Greensboro's Pete Gardiner quickly righted the ship, however, scoring on a rebound of his own shot less than two minutes later, making the score 2-1 entering the second period. It stayed that way well into the middle frame, but the Generals persistence paid off, with Matt Turek tying the game 2-2. It was a wild third period, with Columbia getting 28 shots on goal with the help of six power plays, including over two minutes of five-on-three play. They took the lead at 3-2 on a Rejean Stringer power play goal. The Generals countered to tie the game minutes later while shorthanded with Kurt Drummond converting a Mark Turner pass. Given a second two-man advantage, the Inferno struck again for a 4-3 lead with just over eleven minutes to go. The Generals tied the game by making the most of their one power play opportunity of the period, with Turek tapping a rebound past Josh Blackburn to tie the game with 4:29 left in regulation, setting up the overtime drama. Sam Ftorek nearly took the roof off the building with his game-winning goal at 1:32 of overtime, burning the back of the net with one of his patented slap shots from the top of the right circle.
