Kalamazoo Wings Week In Review For the Week of March 3rd- 9th
Record Last Week: 3-0-0 Overall Record 24-31-8
Game Rewind The K-Wings hit the ice three times last week, as they played the three top teams in the Western Conference. Kalamazoo started the week on Wednesday (2/26), as they hosted the Muskegon Fury. The defending Colonial Cup Champions started the games scoring 7:04 into the first period, when Robin Bouchard beat Chad Alban for Bouchard's 30th goal of the season. However, from the there the night would belong to Kalamazoo. 17 seconds after the Fury took the 1-0 lead; the K-Wings tied it back up with Kurt Miller's 15th goal of the season. Miller (16th) lit the lamp again later in the period, when his power play goal gave Kalamazoo a 2-1 lead. The K-Wings added an insurance goal late in the second period, when Shawn Roed scored on a one-timer from the slot to give the K-Wings a 3-1 lead. The 3-1 lead would hold, as the K-Wings defeated the Fury for just the second time this season. Chad Alban recorded 32 saves to register his 15th win of the year.
The Kalamazoo Wings continued the week on Friday (2/28), as they traveled to Quad City to battle the Mallards. In a game marred in penalties, the K-Wings and the Mallards combined for 190 PIMS, including a Kalamazoo franchise record of 93 minutes. The game proved also to be a showcase of offensive talent, as Quad City grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a goal from Brian Bolf (8) at the 6:07 mark of the period. The K-Wings tied the game up later in the period, when former Mallard Shawn Roed lit the lamp for the 12th time this season make the score 1-1. Kalamazoo would take a 2-1 lead into the 1st intermission, when Richard Keyes broke out of his 15 game scoring drought when scored his team leading 24th of the season with just 3 seconds remaining in the period. Kalamazoo extended their lead to 3-1 early in the second period, when Mark Lawrence (8) scored a power play goal 45 seconds into the period. In the later stages of the second, Quad City scored their lone goal of the period also on the power play, when Brent Meyers tallied his 24th of the year to make the score 3-2 Kalamazoo heading into the third period. In the final period, the Mallards tied the game at 3-3, when Tom Menicci scored on the power play 1:27 into the period. Kalamazoo regained the lead late in regulation, when Keyes (25) scored his second of the game from the slot to give the K-Wings a 4-3 lead. 37 seconds after the K-Wings took the lead; the Mallards battled back and tied the game at 4-4, as the reigning player of the week Patrick Nadeau scored his 17th of the season to force the game into a shootout. In the extra session, it was the K-Wings lead by Michael Ford and Shawn Roed who outscored the Mallards two-nothing, that would guide the K-Wings to a 5-4 shootout victory, and snapping a three game losing streak for Kalamazoo at the The MARK of the Quad Cities.
Kalamazoo concluded their tour of the Western Conference with a home game against the Missouri River Otters at Wings Stadium on Sunday (3/2). The K-Wings got the scoring started in the first period, when Shawn Roed (13) scored on a rebound to extend his goal streak to 4 games. Kalamazoo extended their lead to 2-0 early in the second period, when Peter Roed got in the scoring column with his 19th goal of the year. Missouri cut the lead to 2-1, 18 seconds later when Lonnie Loach (25th) scored his first of three goals to the River Otters back in the game. Kalamazoo would get their lead back to two goals 15:34 into the period, when Richard Keyes tallied his team leading 26th goal of the season to make the score 3-1. Kalamazoo continued their scoring onslaught late in the period, when Yannick Carpentier scored his first of two goals to give the K-Wings a 4-1 lead heading into the third period. In the third, after a Loach goal made the score 4-2, the K-Wings would put the game on ice, as Carpentier netted his second of the game to make the score 5-2. Missouri added one last goal, as Loach netted the hat trick with his 27th of the year, but it wouldn't be enough as Kalamazoo defeated Missouri by the final of 5-3.
Fast Forward The K-Wings continue their playoff push with four games this week. Kalamazoo hits the ice tonight (3/3) as they travel to Flint to play the Generals. This game was originally scheduled for January 22nd; however, a scheduling conflict at the IMA Sports Arena pushed the game back to tonight. The K-Wings enter tonight's game needing a victory over Flint. Kalamazoo is 6 points behind Flint and 1 point behind Rockford for the final playoff spot in the UHL. Besides moving closer to a playoff spot, the K-Wings are also looking to snap two losing streaks against Flint. Kalamazoo has dropped nine straight games to the Generals, and six straight at the IMA Sports Arena.

Kalamazoo will stay on the road on Wednesday (3/5), as they travel back to Quad City to play the Mallards. The K-Wings defeated the Mallards last week in a shootout by the score of 5-4, in a game that featured 190 combined penalty minutes, including 93 from Kalamazoo. The meeting will also be the first half of a home and home series that will conclude on Friday (3/7), when the two teams play at Wings Stadium.
The K-Wings finish off the week at Wings Stadium, as they play host to the Port Huron Beacons on Saturday, (3/7). This will be the seventh of eight meetings between the teams. The K-Wings are 3-3-0 against Port Huron this season, and the final two meetings in the regular season between the teams are at Wings Stadium. The K-Wings can still knock the Beacons from the post season. The Beacons lead the K-Wings by 11 points with 15 games remaining.
Elezi Suspended K-Wing forward Charlie Elezi has been suspended 1 game by the UHL for his actions during the K-Wings game against Quad City last Friday. The 1-game suspension is in addition to the one suspension he received for his match penalty in that same game. Charlie serve the match penalty suspension yesterday against Missouri, and will serve his 1-game suspension tonight against Flint. Ironically, Elezi will make his return to the K-Wings roster Wednesday night, when the K-Wings take on Quad City in Moline, Illinois.
Six and Counting With his assist in the K-Wings victory on yesterday against Missouri, K-Wings defenseman Mark Vilneff extended his scoring streak to 6 games. In his past six games, Vilneff has scored 1 goal and has added 5 assists. The six game scoring streak is just two games shy of the K-Wings season high scoring streak of 8 games held by Mark Lawrence.
Blues Brothers Back at Wings Stadium The world renounced Blues Brothers will be performing at Wings Stadium during the K-Wings home game on Friday, March 7th Vs Quad City. The Blues Brothers will be entertaining fans during the first and second period intermissions.
Roed Extends Streak to Four With his goal in the first period against Missouri yesterday, K-Wings forward Shawn Roed has extended his goal-scoring streak to 4 games. In his past four games, Roed has tallied 4 goals and has added an assist. Shawn's four game goal streak, is one game shy of the team's season high of 5 games held by Richard Keyes.
Win Streak Extended to Three With their victory over Missouri yesterday, the K-Wings have extended their winning streak to three games. The three game streak ties the K-Wings longest winning streak of the season set January 10th-12th.
Silent Radio For the next two weeks due to the K-Wings game schedule, there will not be "K-Wings Live". due, Join General Manager/Head Coach Paul Pickard and the "Voice of the K-Wings" Mike Modugno on "K-Wings Live" when they return to the airwaves on March 18th. The show is on The Sports Station 1600 AM WQSN Tuesday's from 6:30-7PM at Gallagher's Eatery on Stadium Drive.
The Obscure Stat of the Week When Richard Keyes scores the K-Wings usually wins. The K-Wings are 12-6-1 in games in which Richard Keyes scores a goal.
