Tacoma Rainiers News Release
Albuquerque, NM - The Tacoma Rainiers scored three runs in the top of the first inning at Isotopes Park on Tuesday, two of which came on Jaycob Brugman's fourth home run, but the Albuquerque Isotopes bounced back to take the four-game series opener, 9-7.
Fresh off a walk-off grand slam in extra innings on Monday, Tacoma (36-42) broke out the lumber in the opening inning, starting with an RBI single from Kristopher Negron that scored Tim Lopes for the game's first tally. Brugman was the next batter and deposited a 1-1 pitch from Isotopes (34-44) starter Jeff Hoffman (4-3).
Rainiers right-hander Tyler Cloyd (1-7) dealt a scoreless first but was tagged for five runs in the second inning, one in the third and three more in the fifth. The starter issued one walk and allowed nine hits, striking out five Isotopes.
Ian Miller singled and moved back into a tie for the league lead with his 20th stolen base in the top of the fifth before Lopes singled him home, cutting the deficit, 6-4.
An inning later, Tacoma capitalized on a pair of defensive blunders, as Jose Lobaton and Jordan Pacheco scored on separate errors by third baseman Nelson Molina to get the Rainiers within three, 9-6.
Jose Lobaton raked his Rainiers-leading 10th round-tripper in the top of the eighth inning for the game's final run, a leadoff solo shot against Ben Bowden.
Tacoma got the tying run on in the ninth, but Brugman rolled into a game-ending double play.
Reggie McClain pitched three scoreless innings in relief to keep Tacoma in striking distance. The right-hander lowered his ERA across all three levels he's played at this season (Triple-A Tacoma, Double-A Arkansas, Advanced-A Modesto) to 1.96 (55 IP, 12 ER).
Tacoma and Albuquerque will match up again on Wednesday when Anthony Misiewicz (2-4, 7.39) takes the hill for the Rainiers. Mike Curto will have full coverage of on South Sound Talk 850 with audio streaming available on the Tacoma Rainiers TuneIn Radio Network.
