Toledo Walleye News Release
The Storm's 31-11-8 record gives Toledo 70 points, which places the Storm tied for second place with the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies (30-10-10 = 70) in the overall ECHL standings. Both teams trail the Peoria Rivermen (34-13-3 = 71) by one point.
Toledo's .700 win percentage is tied with the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies for the second best in the league. Both teams trail the Peoria Rivermen, whose .710 win percentage is the best in the league.
With the home victory over the Dayton Bombers on Sunday of this week, the Storm picked up the team's seventeenth win at home (17-2-4 = 38), surpassing the total number of home victories and home points that the team had in the entire year last season, when Toledo had a home record of 16-15-5 = 37.
With the overtime loss in Trenton on Wednesday (0-1) and the back-to-back losses in Atlantic City on Friday and Saturday, the Storm went winless for three consecutive games (0-2-1) for the third time this season. Toledo also went winless for three straight from January 26 through February (0-2-1); and from November 29 through December 6 (0-2-1). The Storm snapped the most recent three-game winless streak with the 6-0 win over Dayton on Sunday afternoon.
In Trenton last Wednesday, the Storm played the Titans to a 0-0 tie through 60 minutes of regulation. (Trenton won that game when they scored the game's only goal 2:27 into the five-minute sudden-death, four-on-four overtime.) That marked the twelfth time this season that Toledo has played to a tie, and the Storm has a record of 4-0-8 in those games.
Wednesday's game was the seventh tie that Toledo had experienced in the fifteen games up to and including the match-up with the Titans. Toledo is 1-0-6 in the team's last seven ties, including three losses in overtime.
The Storm has been involved in five games this season that have been resolved in overtime. Toledo has a record of 1-0-4 in those games.
Wednesday's game marked the seventh start of the season for Storm goaltender, Mike Minard, and he extended his personal unbeaten streak for the Storm to a perfect seven games. However, four of those games ended in a tie, and Minard ended up on the short-end in each of those four games (3-0-4). Two of those four ties were resolved in a shootout and two in overtime. Minard lost his first game in regulation as member of the Storm on Friday night, when Atlantic City defeated Toledo 4-0.
Wednesday's game marked the fourth time this season that the Storm had been shutout. Andrew Allen was the goaltender for Trenton in this game. This was the second shutout of the season for Allen against Toledo, as he held the Storm scoreless (0-3) as a member of the Dayton Bombers back on November 30.
The Storm was able to muster only 14 shots on Trenton goaltender, Andrew Allen, on Wednesday night. That was a season low for the team, eclipsing the 18 that Toledo had on the Dayton Bombers (and their goaltender, Andrew Allen) on November 30.
In Wednesday's overtime loss, Toledo had only three shots on goal in the second period. That established a season low for the team, "beating out" the four shots that the Storm had against the Lexington Men O'War in the second period in a 3-2 win on November 9. Toledo was also able to muster only three shots on goal against the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies in the third period of Friday's 4-0 loss.
In the first three games this week, during the course of which the Storm went 0-2-1, Toledo was able to get a total of 68 shots on goal, which is an average of 22.67 shots per game-almost thirteen shots per game lower than the average the Storm had entering the week (35.24). The Storm fired 38 shots on goal against the Dayton Bombers in Sunday's game and currently average 34.52 shots on goal per game, which is fourth best in the league.
With Wednesday's 0-1 overtime loss to Trenton and Saturday's 2-3 loss to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies, twenty-four of the fifty games that Toledo has played this season have been resolved by a one-goal differential. The Storm is 13-3-8 in those games.
On Thursday, February 6th, Storm goaltender, Doug Teskey, was re-called to the Grand Rapids Griffins of the American Hockey League. He became the thirteenth player this season to play with the Storm and to also get called up to the AHL. The Storm signed Dave Marlin as an emergency back-up for the games on Friday and Saturday; and Tom Fortunate served as the emergency back-up on Sunday. Nine different goaltenders have now worn the Storm sweater this season.
Friday's 4-0 loss to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies marked the first time this season that the Storm was defeated in regulation by an opponent from outside the Northwest Division. The Bullies also beat Toledo (2-3) on Saturday afternoon. The Storm now has a record of 8-2-2 against teams from outside the Northwest Division, and Toledo has three more games remaining on the regular season schedule against non-divisional opponents (Sunday, February 23 @ Reading Royals; Saturday, March 1 v. Louisiana IceGators; and Wednesday, March 19 v. Reading Royals).
Friday's shutout loss to the Atlantic City Boardwalk Bullies (0-4) marked the fifth time this season that the Storm has been held off the scoreboard. It also marked the second time that the Storm was blanked in consecutive games. (Toledo was shutout in back-to-back games on November 29 and 30-by the Peoria Rivermen and Dayton Bombers, respectively.)
With the goal by Paul Ballantyne on Saturday afternoon against the Boardwalk Bullies at the 10:02 mark of the first period, the Storm snapped the team's scoreless streak (dating back to a goal scored by Wes Mason at 8:33 of the third period against the Mississippi Sea Wolves on Sunday, February 2) at 143:56. That is the longest scoreless streak of the season for the Storm, eclipsing the 139:37 scoreless streak from November 24 through December 6.
In Friday night's game, the Storm penalty killing gave up two power play goals to Atlantic City in eight opportunities. That marked the eleventh time this season that the Storm PK has given up two goals to the opponent. The Storm has given up more than two power play goals only once (on January 8) when the Jackson Bandits scored 3 power play goals in five chances.
Paul Ballantyne's goal in the 3-2 loss for the Storm on Saturday in Atlantic City (which tied the game at one at 10:02 of the first period) was his fifth of the season and was scored while the Storm was on the power play. Three of Ballantyne's five goals have been scored on the power play.
Jeff Mitchell scored the Storm's second goal on Saturday afternoon to tie the game at two (at the 8:35 mark of the second period). That was Mitchell's eighth goal of the season, and his second in his last nineteen games.
Saturday's game was tied at two entering the third period, and the Boardwalk Bullies scored the game winning goal 1:02 into the third. That marked the first time this season that the Storm has been defeated in regulation time when entering the third period tied with the opponent. Toledo has a record of 5-1-6 in such games.
In Sunday's 6-0 victory over the Dayton Bombers, the Storm scored the game's first goal for the thirtieth time this season. The Storm has a record of 25-1-4 in games where the team has scored first.
The six goal differential in the Storm's win on Sunday represents the largest margin of victory of the season for Toledo.
The Storm's Nick Parillo scored the game's first goal (at 10:18 of the first period) in the 6-0 victory for the Storm over the Dayton Bombers on Sunday afternoon. That marked the fifth time this season that Parillo scored the game's first goal. That goal also turned out to be the fourth game winner for Parillo on the season-and his first gwg in a span of 38 games. (Parillo' s last game winner came in the twelfth game of the season, a 5-2 victory over the Peoria Rivermen).
Nick Parillo also scored the Storm's fifth goal on Sunday afteroon, marking the second time this season that he has scored two in a single game-and his eleventh multi-point performance of the season. He currently has forty-three points (18g-25a=43pts), which places him tied for seventh in the overall rookie scoring race.
Playing in his first game as a member of the Toledo Storm, veteran forward, Jim Brown, picked up an assist on the team's first goal-Parillo's game winner-on Sunday.
The Storm's second goal on Sunday was scored by Dale Junkin, fifty-five seconds into the second period, while the Storm was on the power play. That was Junkin's eighth goal of the season, and his third ppg. Junkin also assisted on two other Storm goals, including the game winner by Parillo, thus marking the second time this season that he has scored three or more points in a single game. (He had a four point game-1g-3a-against Dayton on November 16). Junkin has had eight multi-point games for the Storm this season.
Matt Ellis scored the Storm's third goal at the 3:08 mark of the second period, while the Storm was playing a man short. For Ellis, that was his first goal in fourteen games for the Storm. It was also his second short-handed goal (and the fifth for the team) of the season.
Ellis scored his second goal of the game at the 16:17 mark of the second period, to make the score 4-0. The Storm was on the power play at the time of that goal. That was Ellis' twelfth goal of the season, and four of those goals have been scored while the Storm was playing with the man advantage. For Ellis, that marked the second time this season (and in his pro career) that he scored two goals in a single game.
Tim Verbeek assisted on both goals scored by Matt Ellis in the second period of Sunday's 6-0 win over Dayton. For Verbeek, that was his sixth multi-point performance of the season.
Wes Mason scored the sixth goal of the Sunday's game for the Storm. For Mason, that was his eleventh goal of the season, and the third in his last seven games.
Mike Minard stopped all 29 shots that he saw from Dayton on Sunday to pick up his first shutout as a member of the Toledo Storm. Minard also picked up an assist-his first as a member of the Storm-on Matt Ellis' short-handed goal.
Sunday's 6-0 win over the Bombers on Sunday marked the third shutout of the season for the Storm. Three different goaltenders have picked up these shutouts against three different teams: (i) Doug Teskey @ Lexington, 10/20; (ii) Tom Draper v. Johnstown, 12/28; and (iii) Mike Minard v. Dayton, 02/09.
With Sunday's shutout, Toledo's team goals against average is now 2.79, which is second best overall in the league.
In Sunday's game, the Storm picked up a total of 63 minutes, and, perhaps paradoxically, none of those pims were assessed against Darryl Bootland, who currently leads the league with 299 pims. Sunday's game broke a string of eleven games in which Bootland picked up at least 2 penalty minutes. In only twelve of the forty-eight games played by Bootland for the Storm this season has he failed to pick up at least one penalty.
The Storm's power play unit scored two goals in six opportunities on Sunday, marking the eleventh time this season that Toledo has scored two or more power play goals in a single game. Overall this season, the Storm has scored 49 power play goals in 301 chances, which is a 16.3% scoring ratio-nineteenth out of the 27 teams in that category.
Toledo's penalty killing unit stopped Dayton's power play in all ten chances they had on Sunday. That marked the first time this season that the Storm PK killed off ten power plays against in a single game. Toledo has now allowed 49 power play goals against in 301 total chances for the opposition, which is a 83.7% kill ratio-fifth in the league in that category.
