San Diego Gulls News Release
SAN DIEGO - The injury bug has certainly caught up to the San Diego Gulls. First it was Dennis Purdie. Then it was Samy Nasreddine. Then it was Kevin Grant. Combine that with Mike Garrow being sent up to Utah and a couple suspensions and you have yourself a pretty tough, not to mention tiring week.
With four regulars out of the lineup, the Gulls could only dress a maximum of 15 skaters last week. But that was only a maximum.
Wednesday in Fresno, San Diego was only able to suit up 13 skaters, thanks to a couple game suspensions to Ashlee Langdone and Dennis Mullen. That number was almost reduced to 12 but Jamie Black, whose wife Tera gave birth late Monday night, scurried to make the trip.
Saturday the Blue and Orange suffered another blow when Trevor Koenig had to leave the game injured. The team wouldn't disclose the injury or its extent and his status is day-to-day.
So, now the Gulls (27-15-3) are again in unfamiliar territory: third place. San Diego comes into this week with 57 points, tied with the Fresno Falcons. The Gulls and Falcons are three points behind the Bakersfield Condors and 19 behind the Idaho Steelheads.
NOTES: Koenig picked up his 100th all-time West Coast Hockey League win Wednesday in Fresno. He still needs seven more W's for 100 in his Gulls tenure... San Diego has earned at least one point in 21 of its last 26 games (19-5-2)...
TRANSACTIONS:
Purdie remains on injured reserve... Garrow remains with the American Hockey League's Utah Grizzlies... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera still remain with the AHL's Hershey Bears...
COMMUNITY UPDATE: Saturday: The Gulls, McDonald's and Ronald McDonald House Charities officially kicked-off their new fundraising partnership. Representatives from each organization were on hand to explain the "McDonald's Nights" fundraising promotion. Gulls player Joe Bianchi, Ronald McDonald and Baby Gull were also on hand. The "Ultimate Family Pack Giveaway" grand prize Miramar Volkswagen New Beetle was on display as well.
Sunday: The Gulls annual golf tournament took place at the Mt. Woodson Golf Course in Ramona. Fans had their opportunity to tee it up with their favorite player or local celebrity. The proceeds from the event went to the B.J. MacPherson Foundation.
RECAP:
Gulls 3 @, FALCONS 8; Tuesday, Feb. 4: Glen Gulutzan lit the lamp four times, leading Fresno to its five-goal thumping of the Blue and Orange. The Falcons jumped out to a 2-0 lead, before the Gulls quickly tied it. Gulutzan and the rest of the Falcons took over from there and cruised to the victory.
GULLS 2 @ Falcons 1; Wednesday, Feb. 5: Koenig turned aside 28 shots lifting the short-handed Gulls to a gutsy 2-1 triumph. San Diego was ahead 1-0 when Fresno tied it with one second left in the middle period. Trevor Sherban put the Blue and Orange ahead for good, however, with a power-play tally early in the third.
CONDORS 4 @ Gulls 3 (SO); Friday, Feb. 7: Bakersfield controlled the tempo most of the game, but two late goals muscled the Gulls to a shootout. In the extra frame, Kevin St. Pierre out-dueled Koenig as the Condors took sole possession of second place.
FALCONS 5 @ Gulls 2; Saturday, Feb. 8: Fresno scored three times in the first period and never looked back, beating the Blue and Orange for the second time in one week. The Falcons carried a 4-0 lead into the third period, before the Gulls made it a 4-2 game. It was too little too late though as Colin Embley sealed the win with a late tally.
THIS WEEK:
San Diego hosts the Anchorage Aces Tuesday, before going up to Bakersfield Wednesday. The Gulls are back home for a two-game weekend set against the Long Beach Ice Dogs. The Blue and Orange are 14-2 combined against Anchorage and Long Beach this season. Friday at the Sports Arena is the first "McDonald's Night." Saturday, the first 10,000 fans will receive a long-sleeved T-shirt, courtesy of Cox Communications and your San Diego County Toyota Dealers.
