Kalamazoo Wings Week In Review For the Week of February 10th-February 16th

Record Last Week: 0-4-0 Overall Record 19-27-7

Game Rewind The K-Wings hit the ice four times last week. Kalamazoo started the week on Wednesday (2/05), as they hosted the Flint Generals at Wings Stadium. While the K-Wings played well for 52 minutes of the contest, it was the first 8 minutes that would propel Flint to victory. The Generals scored 4 goals on their first 7 shots of the game, and they wouldn't look back as they defeated the K-Wings 6-1. Kalamazoo lone tally was scored by Kurt Miller; for Miller the goal was his 10th of the season

Kalamazoo's two game home stand against Flint continued on Friday (2/07), as they hosted the Generals for the second time in three nights. The Generals would again use a fast start to put the game away early as they tallied 4 unanswered goals in the first period leading to rookie goaltender Jason Brown replacing Chad Alban with just over 5 minutes to go in the first period. Although the K-Wings would get within two goals halfway through the second period, Flints offense proved to be too much to handle as they would go on to win the game 8-4. Kurt Miller would again lead the K-Wings offensively as he would tally two goals on the night.

The K-Wings third game of the week took place on Saturday (2/08) as they traveled to Fort Wayne, Indiana to battle the Komets. Mohammad Ali and the largest crowed in UHL history (10,503) witnessed perhaps the best goaltending performance of the season, as Chad Alban was incredible stopping 32 of 33 shots. On the other side of the rink, Komets goaltender Tom Lawson was equally as good, as he knocked a side all 8 shots he faced to earn his 6th shutout of the season, as the Komets defeated the K-Wings 1-0. The lone goal of the game was scored midway in the third period, when Ryan Severson scored his 10th of the season at 11:14 mark of the period. The loss extended the K-Wings losing streak to 5 games, while the victory ended the Komets 2 game winless streak.

The K-Wings played their third game in three nights on Sunday (2/09) as they took on the Muskegon Fury at Wings Stadium. The K-Wings defense was impressive all night only allowing the Fury 20 shots on goal while they were able to fire 40 on Fury goaltender Michael Lanicek. Pat O'Leary's 5th goal of the season half way through the first period would give the K-Wings a 1-0 lead going in the second. However, 3 straight goals by the Fury would give them the lead. The K-Wings would mount a late charge with Dan Hodge scoring his second goal of the year with just under two minutes to go in the game. A final surge of attempts in the last few sounds by the Wings would come up short as they would lose their 6th in a row by the score of 3-2.

Fast Forward The K-Wings enter the week having lost 6 games in a row and will look to put an end to that streak as they again will play 4 games in 5 nights. The K-Wings will play the Flint Generals for the 3rd time in a 7-day span as they travel to Flint on Wednesday (2/12). The K-Wings will be looking to bridge the gap in the playoff race, as Flint enters the contest 3 and a half games ahead of Kalamazoo.

The K-Wings play their lone home game of the week on Friday (2/14), as they take on the Adirondack IceHawks in the 3rd annual Valentines Day Pink Ice Game. On the year, the K-Wings are 2-3-1 against the IceHawks, however, Kalamazoo is 1-1-0 against Adirondack in games played at Wings Stadium.

Kalamazoo finishes off the week on the road as they play two division rivals. On Saturday, (2/15) they travel to Rockford to take on the IceHogs. This game has major playoff and divisional implications for both teams, as Rockford sits only 6 points ahead of Kalamazoo for fourth place in the Western Conference.

The K-Wings final game of the week will take place on Sunday (2/16) as they travel to Missouri to play the River Otters. Although Missouri sits atop the Western Conference, Kalamazoo has enjoyed success this year against the River Otters going 4-2-2 against them so far. -MORE-
