LAST WEEK
Friday, February 7th COLUMBIA 3 Columbus 0
The Inferno got on the board at the 9:41 mark in the first period on a power-play goal from Shawn Wansborough. Matt Ulwelling dug the puck out of the corner to the point, where Chris St. Croix batted it towards Shawn Wansborough. Wansborough fired it over Matus Kostur's left shoulder for his 11th goal of the year. With less than a minute remaining in the first period the Cottonmouths coughed up the puck on their power-play and Rejean Stringer was able to chip the puck towards Robin Carruthers. With the Inferno on the power play, Chris St. Croix put a shot on net that Kostur thought he had gloved. It fell out of his glove and Derek Crimin, who was playing in his first game as an Inferno, sank the two-foot putt to finish the scoring at 3-0. The Inferno shelled the Cottonmouth's Kostur with 43 shots while Couture stopped 31 Cottonmouth shots, with a majority of the Cottonmouths' shots coming from near the blue line. The Inferno's league leading penalty kill continued its ways by holding the Cottonmouths to 0 and 5 on their power play. The Inferno was able to convert on 2 of their 7 chances.
Saturday, February 8th COLUMBIA 3 Pee Dee 2
The Inferno take two points from the Pride as they remain in first place of the Southeast Division in front of Pee Dee by four points. Pee Dee was on the board first with a goal by Derek Halldorson at 6:47 of the first period. Columbia's Robin Carruthers scored a few minutes later to tie the game with a pass from Rejean Stringer. Halfway through the second period, Chris Pittman scored his 17th goal of the season with Eric Labelle on the assist to go up 2-1. Allan Sirois tied the game for the Pride at 11:53 of the third period. After an even, tough paced game, Robin Carruthers scored the game winner, his second of the night with only 56 seconds left in the third. Sean Owens and Matt Ulwelling assisted on the goal. Patrick Couture stopped 27 of 29 shots.
Sunday, February 9th COLUBMIA 2 South Carolina 1
Rejean Stringer had both goals for the Inferno as they beat the Stingrays 2-1. Stringer scored shorthanded at 9:23 of the first period with Sean Owens and Robin Carruthers assisting. Stingrays Joel Irving answered the goal 21 seconds later to tie the game on the power play. Stringer scored his second of the night at 6:45 of the second period that was also the game winner. Carruthers had the assist of the goal. After a scoreless third period, Josh Blackburn earned the win between the pipes stopping 26 or 27 shots. This is the fifth straight win for the Inferno. The Inferno is five points in first place of the Southeast division ahead of the Florida Everblades.
