Greensboro Generals News Release
UPCOMING WEEK: The Greensboro Generals have four games this week, facing four different divisional opponents. The Generals close out a five game road trip on Tuesday night at 7:05 with their final visit of the season to Charlotte to face the Checkers. A Generals win in regulation play will give the Generals the Carolina Cup for the first time in team history. Greensboro then has their first home game in two weeks on Thursday at 7:00, as they face the Richmond Renegades for the final time this season. For Valentine's Day, it's off to Trenton for a 7:05 game against the Titans. The final game of the week is a matinee affair with the Roanoke Express at 4:00 at the Greensboro Coliseum. The game against Roanoke is a rescheduled game, which was originally set to be played this Saturday. All games this season can be heard on WPET AM-950. You can also hear the games online at www.greensborogenerals.com.
LAST WEEK: 2/7 GREENSBORO 3, RICHMOND 6 ¨ The Generals couldn't hold off the Renegades in the third period, allowing four goals in the final frame. Following a scoreless first period, Greensboro took a 1-0 lead on a Matt Chandler goal. However, Richmond countered with two goals of their own for a 2-1 advantage. Pete Gardiner tied the game at 2-2 for Greensboro after the second period before the third period collapse. Chris Bell added a late third period goal after the game was already out of reach. The loss was the Generals' first regulation loss of the season to the Renegades, as they now hold a 4-1-2 record against them.
2/8 GREENSBORO 3, GREENVILLE 2 (SO) ¨ The Generals snapped their season-long four game winless streak in dramatic fashion against the defending Kelly Cup champion Grrrowl. Trailing 1-0 after one period, Greensboro evened the score in the second on Chris Allen's power play goal. It stayed 1-1 well into the third period, but Greenville took the lead with just under five minutes to play. It went down to the final minute, but Mark Turner's turnaround backhanded tied the game up with only 38 seconds left, forcing overtime and ultimately the shootout. The shootout was scoreless through four rounds, but Pete Gardiner connected on the Generals fifth and final attempt, while goaltender Daniel Berthiaume made all five saves in the shootout, winning the game with a poke check on Greenville's Eric Lind on the final shot.
