Baton Rouge Kingfish News Release

On Top: Kingfish centerman Bryan Richardson scored his 104th goal in a Kingfish uniform in Saturday's 5-3 loss to Peoria to break current Kingfish coach Cam Brown's record for most goals scored in a Kingfish career. Brown still holds the franchise record for most goals in a career with 139 markers in nine seasons.

Breaking Out: Clark Jones tallied the Kingfish's first goal in Saturday's 5-3 loss to Peoria. It was Jones' first marker since a power play goal early in the third period in a 3-2 loss on November 22nd at Louisiana.

Between the Pipes: Goaltender Niklas Sundberg saw more rubber in his last two games than the Goodyear Tire factory. In his last five starts, the Stockholm, Sweden native has made over 30 saves in each game including two forty-plus save performances. In 11 starts with the Kingfish, Sundberg has seen over 30 shots in eight games.

On a roll: Kingfish forward Bryan Richardson needs nine goals to break the Kingfish single season record for most goals scored in a season. He added his 24th goal of the season in Saturday's 5-3 loss to Peoria. Richardson is tied with Luke Curtin and Jon Sturgis for most goals scored in a Kingfish uniform in a single season with 32 goals while being on pace to tally 33 this season.

Now Home Ice means nothing: Home ice meant everything when the Kingfish and the IceGators battled in their first four contests with the home team winning all four games. In the last three games between the Kingfish and the IceGators, the visitor has picked up all the wins including the IceGators' 3-0 win at the Centroplex this past Saturday. This trend bodes well for the Kingfish as they travel to the Cajundome to face the IceGators on Friday.

Can I help you? Kingfish defenseman Trevor Demmans is three goals shy of breaking into the top ten for most assists as a Kingfish in a single season. Demmans has 32 assists on the season and needs 35 to break into the top ten and into a tie for eighth place. Dan Shermerhorn holds the Kingfish record for most assists in a single season as a Kingfish with 50 helpers.

Last Week's Games: 0-2-0, 0 pts.

January 7th, Louisiana 3, Kingfish 0

Kyle Kettles recorded his second straight shutout in the Centroplex and three different IceGators chipped in goals for the shutout win. Shawn McNeil gave the IceGators a 1-0 lead on the power play as he crept along the goal line and fired a shot that beat Niklas Sundberg to the short side at the 10:18 mark of the first period. The IceGators extended their lead to two goals early in the second period as Bobby Brown took advantage of a Kingfish defensive mistake and beat Sundberg on a breakaway. A minute and fifty seconds into the third period, Kenny Corupe gave the IceGators a three-goal lead as he beat Sundberg over the shoulder right under the crossbar. Niklas Sundberg recorded 32 saves in the losing effort while the Kingfish went 0-4 on the power play.

January 8th, Peoria 5, Kingfish 3

Clark Jones opened the scoring as he tallied his eighth goal of the season at the 6:16 mark of the first period of play to give the Kingfish a 1-0 lead as he beat Duane Derksen through the five hole. Peoria tied the game at one as Arvid Rekis hooked up with randy Rowe and Tyler Rennette on the power play at the 18:02 mark of the first period. The Kingfish regained the lead as Peoria goaltender Derksen lost sight of Trevor Demmans' flip shot from the point at the 11:08 mark of the second period of play. Just 16 seconds later, Peoria tied the game at two as Tyler Rennette beat Sundberg as he slipped the puck past the netminder. Peoria took the lead for good with 16 seconds left in the second period as Brooks beat Sundberg from the high slot to give the Rivermen the 3-2 lead. Greg Day extended Peoria's lead to two as he punched the puck past Sundberg at the 3:23 mark of the third period. With two minutes left in the third, the Kingfish went on the power play and tried to gain a two-man advantage as they pulled Niklas Sundberg in favor of an extra attacker. Peoria took advantage of the empty net as Rowe found the back of the net with 42 seconds left in the final period. Bryan Richardson cut the Peoria lead to two as he won an offensive zone draw and slipped through the Peoria defense and beat Derkson over the shoulder for the unassisted goal with five seconds left in the third. With the goal, Richardson now holds the Kingfish career mark for most goal as he netted his 104th goal in a Baton Rouge uniform.
