Falcons Pull into Tie for Third with 3-1 Week
February 10, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
The Fresno Falcons scored a season-high 11 goals in a victory against the Anchorage Aces and won two of three from the San Diego Gulls last week to tie the Gulls in third place in the standings.
Last Tuesday was an historic night at Selland Arena as player/assistant coach Glen Gulutzan sprung for four goals and one assist in an 8-3 victory over San Diego to become the first player in team history to eclipse 400 career points in a Falcons uniform. He accomplished the feat in dramatic fashion when point number 400 came on his third goal of the evening to complete the fourth hat trick of his career.
The next evening Fresno and San Diego locked up in a goaltenders' duel with the Gulls prevailing, 2-1. The Falcons responded on Friday to close out a six-game home stand by pouring in a league season-high 11 goals in an 11-6 win against the Aces. Ten different players lit the lamp and 13 of the 15 skaters Fresno had on the bench recorded at least one point.
The Falcons then traveled down to San Diego for the rubber match against the Gulls on Saturday. Fresno exploded right out of the gates, building a 3-0 lead after one period and a 4-0 edge after two on their way to a 5-2 win.
The three victories boosted the Falcons' record to a season-high 10 games above .500 at 26-16-5 and 57 points. Tied for third with San Diego, Fresno trails the second-place Bakersfield Condors by three points with two games in hand.
HECTIC, SUCCESSFUL STRETCH MERITS A LITTLE TIME OFF
Saturday's win capped off Fresno's busiest part of the schedule this season with 21 games in 37 days. The club limped through at times, suiting up emergency players on four different occasions, but was still able to go 14-5-2 and make up 10 points in the standings during the five-week stretch. The Falcons are now rewarded for their efforts by receiving a full week off from the grind. They do not return to game action until this Sunday, Feb. 16, when they host the Condors at 5 p.m. Tickets are still available for the matinee at the Selland Arena box office, all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.com.
FALCONS APPEARANCE ON SATURDAY
Several members of the team, including captain Jason Weaver, leading scorer Kris Porter and goaltender Terry Friesen, are scheduled to appear at the Sprint store on Blackstone and Nees next Saturday, Feb. 15. The players will be signing autographs from 1 â 3 p.m.
PRACTICE SCHEDULE
With more than a week between games, Falcons head coach Blaine Moore gave his team several days off from practice as well. Fresno will not resume preparations for Sunday's game until Thursday at 10 a.m. at Gateway Ice Center. Friday's practice at Gateway is scheduled for 12:15 p.m. and on Saturday they will take the ice at 4:15 p.m. The team will not hold a pre-game morning skate on Sunday.
