Condors Win Three Times to Take a Hold of Second Place
February 10, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Bakersfield traveled to Anchorage for a pair of games on Tuesday and Wednesday. The Condors got off to a good start, leading 2-1 after one period and 3-2 heading into the third. Christian Skoryna scored twice in the first, for his third straight two-goal performance. Paul Rosebush finished a 3-on-2 rush for his 11th of the season to help take the lead into the final stanza. In the third period, however, Anchorage took advantage of power play time by scoring twice to take the lead 4-3 and hang on for the win. It was the Aces seventh win of the season against Bakersfield (four in shootouts).
Wednesday, February 5 Bakersfield blows out Anchorage
The Condors, with the previous night's disappointment in the front of their minds, wasted no time in taking control of this game. J.J. Wrobel, Paul Willett and Jeff Goldie all scored in the first period to lead 3-0. Willett and Wrobel both scored again in the second period to stake the Condors to a 5-0 lead. Anchorage finally beat netminder Kevin St. Pierre for their first of the game late in the middle frame, but the damage had been done. Goldie added his second of the game in the third, while Willett also scored to record the first hat trick of the season for Bakersfield, and they cruised to the 7-2 win.
Friday, February 7 Battle for second place against Gulls
Bakersfield saw another third period lead wasted on this night, but prevailed in a shootout on the road in San Diego on Friday night. Jeff Goldie's tally just past the halfway point of the game broke a 1-1 tie and gave the Condors the lead heading into the third period. Paul Willett scored on a breakaway, tucking home a backhander for the 3-1 advantage four minutes into the third, but the lead would not hold. The Gulls scored twice in the final seven minutes to tie the game, the last one coming with just 2:10 remaining in regulation. In the shootout, Willett scored, as did Goldie, and Quinn Fair slid home the game winner in the first round of sudden death. The Condors reclaimed sole possession of second place with the win.
Saturday, February 8 Attendance: 4,762 Steelheads win the battle
The Condors lost two more players to injury in Friday's match and headed into Saturday's game with just 14 healthy bodies. The fatigue didn't start to show until the second period, when Idaho turned a 2-2 game into a 5-2 lead with three straight goals over a 21-minute span. Dan Shermerhorn tallied three goals and added an assist for the Steelheads, who managed to pound Kevin St. Pierre with 34 shots in the game. Shawn Byram, Quinn Fair, Christian Skoryna and Nate Anderson all scored in the losing effort for Bakersfield, who refused to quit in the game. The Condors last two goals came in the final 4:04 of play. Sunday, February 9 Attendance: 5,095 Condors win to seal the weekend
Bakersfield hosted Long Beach on Sunday, facing their old teammate Danielle Dube between the pipes for the Ice Dogs. Dube had picked up her first career win while wearing a Bakersfield sweater earlier this season. They shot hard, and often, staking a 3-0 lead on goals by Christian Skoryna, Nate Anderson and Jeff Goldie. Long Beach answered with a goal from another former Condor, Denis Ladouceur, early in the second period. Paul Willett and Jamie Cooke both scored in the third period to keep the lead safe and took a 5-2 win. Bakersfield jumped to a three-point lead over San Diego and Fresno for second place with the victory.
