Johnstown Chiefs News Release


The Johnstown Chiefs (20-25-8; 48 PTS; 5th NW div.) did not gain any ground in the Northwest division playoff race as they went 1-1-1 last week. The Chiefs beat Lexington in OT on Wednesday night. Friday night they fell in a shootout to Cincinnati and were shutout 3-0 Saturday by Wheeling. The Chiefs trail Lexington by four points for the fourth and final playoff spot in the division. The Chiefs will play two games this week as they travel to Reading on Friday and Trenton on Saturday.

GAME #51 (2/5/03) JOHNSTOWN 3 – Lexington 2 St. Pierre and Boutin Goal and Assist

Sam St. Pierre's goal 1:37 into overtime gave the Chiefs a 3-2 OT win over the visiting Lexington Men O'War Wednesday night. J.F. Boutin and Phil Roy also scored for the Chiefs. Goaltender Peter Aubry made 28 saves for the win. Both Lexington goals (Jared Smyth, Ben Storey) came on the power play.

GAME #52 (2/7/03) Cincinnati 3 – JOHNSTOWN 2 Hildenbrand Two Assists

The Chiefs surrendered a 2-0 lead in the third period to the Cincinnati Cyclones and would go on to lose 3-2 in a shootout. Jeff Sullivan and Jim Leger scored for the Chiefs. Goaltender Peter Aubry made 39 saves. Japanese goaltender Yutaka Fukufuji made his North American debut with the Cyclones making 30 saves.

GAME #53 (2/8/03) Wheeling 3 – JOHNSTOWN 0 Scally 20 Saves

The Wheeling Nailers scored a goal in each period as they downed the Chiefs 3-0 Saturday night at the War Memorial. Zenon Konopka, Steve Crampton, and Matt Smith all scored for the Nailers. Chiefs goaltender Mark Scally made 20 saves in the loss, while Wheeling goaltender Tyler MacKay made 32 saves for the shutout.

The Chiefs and the Reading Royals (24-23-3; 51 PTS; 7th NE div.) face-off for the fourth time this season, Friday night at Reading's Sovereign Center. The Chiefs are 1-2-0 against Reading this season. All three games were in Johnstown. Reading has outscored the Chiefs 14-13. The Chiefs last played the Royals on January 24th, where the Chiefs came away with a 9-4 win. The Royals are winless in their last three games (0-2-1).

The Chiefs and the Trenton Titans (26-17-7; 59 PTS, 4th NE div.) meet for the third time this season Saturday night in Trenton. The Chiefs are 1-1-0 against the Titans this season and 4-12-2 all-time. The Titans are 7-3-0 in their last ten games.

- Brent Bilodeau leads the team with three game winning goals.
