BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads announced today they have waived defenseman Matt Martin.

Martin played 14 games with the Steelheads this season as a player/assistant coach before deciding to retire. Last year, he was behind the bench for the Steelheads as an assistant coach. In that position he helped head coach John Olver lead the team to the Taylor Cup Championship round. Prior to coaching, Martin played the full 2000-01 season for Idaho, tallying 36 points on the year.

Martin was a 4th round selection by the Toronto Maple Leafs in the 1989 National Hockey League (NHL) Entry Draft. He played a total of 76 games in the NHL, all with the Leafs.

Martin is retiring from hockey to pursue other career interests. He and his wife Deanne are leaving Boise to move back East.
