Alaska Aces News Release

ANCHORAGE, Alaska. – Anchorage will have a chance for redemption this week as Long Beach invades Sullivan Arena after sweeping a three-game series from the Aces earlier this year at home.

Anchorage grabbed its first win at home Sunday with a 5-1 rout of the San Diego Gulls behind two goals and an assist from Dean Larson and 30 saves by Christian Soucy. Carl Drakensjo contributed a goal and an assist, while Yvan Corbin and J.J. Wrobel each dished out two assists. Sunday's victory marked the first time all year the Aces were ahead after one period and enjoyed more than a one-goal lead. Anchorage actually played even better on Saturday, when the two teams combined for one of the more exciting games in the WCHL this season. Despite another goal by Larson, now the league's leading scorer with 19 points (8g-11a), San Diego forced a shootout and eventually emerged with a 2-1 victory. Eric Landry scored the only Aces' goal in a 4-1 loss Friday night. Rookie winger Jiri Jakes, signed just prior to the series, had assists in each of his first two professional games, while UAA product Gregg Zaporzan scored his first pro goal (which turned out to be the game-winner) in Sunday's victory.

The Ice Dogs (6-4) arrive in town this week for Tuesday and Wednesday night games at Sullivan Arena at 7:00 p.m. Three weeks ago at Long Beach Arena, Chris Kenady and Tomas Hradecky scorched the Aces with a combined 19 points as the Ice Dogs recorded 4-3, 5-2, and 7-1 victories. Corbin, currently second behind Larson in the WCHL scoring race with 18 points (9g-9a), and Drakensjo each had two goals in the series for Anchorage. The Aces have dropped 10 of the past 11 meetings between the two teams. If Anchorage can end that slide and win both games this week, it would be just one point from escaping the WCHL cellar.
