Sound Tigers and Islanders Make Moves

NORFOLK, VA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, have announced the loan of forward Jeff Tambellini and defenseman Denis Grebeshkov, as well as the return of forwards Sean Bergenheim and Robert Nilsson to the team by the big club following Thursday's NHL trade deadline. All four players were then recalled by the Islanders but are now eligible for the Sound Tigers' AHL Clear Day roster, which will be officially set this coming Monday, March 13th. The Sound Tigers have also announced the reassignment of defenseman Vince Macri by the Islanders to the ECHL's Fresno Falcons.

Tambellini and Grebeshkov were acquired by the Islanders from the NHL's Los Angeles Kings Wednesday. Both of the newly-acquired players are former first-round draft picks.

Tambellini, who will turn 22 next month, was selected first, 27th overall, by Los Angeles in the 2003 NHL Entry Draft and has spent most of this season with the Kings' AHL affiliate, the Manchester Monarchs. The 5'11'' 186-pounder from Port Moody, British Columbia is tied for third among all AHL rookies with 56 points and ranks among the league's leading freshmen at fourth with 25 goals, sixth with 31 assists and tied for third with a +17. In addition to playing 56 AHL games, Tambellini appeared in his first four NHL games with Los Angeles this season. He played the past three years (2002-05) at the University of Michigan where he totaled 65 goals, 64 assists and 129 points in 124 career games.

Grebeshkov, 22, was chosen first, 18th overall, by the Kings in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. The 6'1'' 195-pounder from Yaroslavl, Russia has two goals, 25 assists, 27 points and 59 penalty minutes in 48 AHL games with Manchester, as well as two assists and 12 penalty minutes in eight NHL games with Los Angeles this season. Grebeshkov played in the AHL last season and split 2003-04 between the Monarchs and the Kings after two years (2001-03) with Yaroslavl Lokomotiv in Russia.

Bergenheim-- the Islanders' first-round pick in 2002 --leads all Sound Tigers with 25 goals and 112 penalty minutes in addition to posting 22 assists and 47 points in 55 AHL games this season. He also has four penalty minutes in seven NHL games with the Islanders this season. Nilsson-- the Islanders' first-round pick in 2003 --has eight goals, 20 assists, 28 points and 12 penalty minutes in 29 AHL games with the Sound Tigers, as well as two goals, four assists, six points and ten penalty minutes in 32 NHL games with the Islanders this season. Macri notched one goal, seven assists, eight points and 41 penalty minutes in 50 AHL games with the Sound Tigers this season.

The Sound Tigers will begin a stretch of seven straight road games when they visit the Norfolk Admirals tonight and tomorrow, Friday and Saturday, March 10th and 11th.
