Atlanta Calls for Backup

The Atlanta Thrashers have recalled center DEREK MacKENZIE and defenseman MARK POPOVIC (PAH-puh-vihk) from the Chicago Wolves.

POPOVIC has appeared in four tilts during two stints with Atlanta this year, averaging 9:26 minutes per game in ice time. Overall, he has played five career National Hockey League games, which includes his debut with the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 2003-04.

The 23-year-old blueliner has accrued career-highs with nine goals and 30 points, and matched a career-most 21 assists in 59 outings with the Wolves this year.

MacKENZIE has collected 10 goals and 22 points in 31 games with the Wolves this year. The team's 24-year-old captain missed 28 games at the start of the season due to injury.

The Sudbury, Ontario, native has racked up one assist and 12 penalty minutes in 13 games with the Thrashers (2001-02 and 2003-04). This is his first visit to the NHL this season.
