Pirates edge Bears 3-2 in overtime at Portland

The Pirates rallied from two one-goal deficits to tie the game and win in overtime Friday night at Cumberland County Civic Center 3-2.

Dave Steckel put the BEARS on the board in the first period with his 12th goal of the season. The goal at 4:58 gave HERSHEY a 1-0 lead. Portland would strike again before intermission when Igor Pohanka picked up his eighth of the year at 17:02 of the period. The Pirates outshot the BEARS 8-5 in the period and were tied at one after twenty minutes.

In the second period, HERSHEY took the lead late when Mike Green scored a five-on-three power play goal at 15:25. The BEARS dominated the period offensively, outshooting Portland 15-5, and the Chocolate and White took a 2-1 lead to the dressing room after forty minutes.

Portland would find a way to tie the game at two early in the third period when Zenon Konopka scored his eighth of the season at 4:48. The game would go into overtime, where the only lead for the Pirates in the game would be on the game-winner. Aaron Gavey scored his 12th of the year at 2:49 of overtime to win it for Portland.

HERSHEY goaltender Frederic Cassivi made his AHL best 51st appearance and suffered the hard luck loss. Jani Hurme won his fourth of the year against five losses in net for Portland.

The BEARS will play the third game of the road trip and the second consecutive game in Portland on Saturday night at 7:00 p.m. Air time on the BEARS Radio Network will be 6:40 p.m.
