Kanko Scores Game-Winner In Overtime For Monarchs

MANCHESTER, NH - Left wing Petr Kanko scored with 12-seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Manchester Monarchs over the Binghamton Senators, 3-2, at the Verizon Wireless Arena in front of 8,653 fans on Friday night.
Manchester (36-21-2-4, 78 points) is in third place in the Atlantic Division. Binghamton (25-30-4-3, 57 points) is in sixth place in the East Division.
As the first period approached the buzzer, center Connor James skated into the Senators zone and stole the puck from a Binghamton defenseman. Skating toward the net and shuffling the puck from backhand to forehand, James deked Senators goaltender Jeff Glass and slipped the puck under his right pad to give the Monarchs a 1-0 lead heading into the locker room. James' 16th goal of the season was unassisted at 19:04 of the first period.
On the power play to start the second period, the Monarchs took advantage of Senators defenseman Tomas Malec's two-minute elbowing penalty. Defenseman Joey Mormina passed the puck over to fellow blueliner Marty Wilford at the center point who wound up and blasted a slap shot past Glass for his fourth goal of the season at 1:34 of the middle frame. Center Greg Hogeboom also assisted on the goal to give the Monarchs a 2-0 lead.
Binghamton's leading scorer left wing Denis Hamel made time stand still as he scored his 43rd goal of the season at 9:26 of the second period during a 5-on-3 power play. Defenseman Filip Novak sent the puck to Hamel at the right face-off dot. Hamel's blistering snap shot ripped through the air and into the top right corner of the net before any Monarchs player could react, including goaltender Barry Brust. If you blinked, you missed it. Center Charlie Stephens also assisted on the goal to bring the Senators to within one, 2-1.
At 17:46 of the final stanza, Stephens roofed the puck over Brust for his 18th goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2. Left wing Grant Potulny collected the puck behind the net and attempted a wrap around goal but Brust was there for the save. Stephens picked up the loose puck for the score. Defenseman Jan Platil also assisted on the tying goal.
With 12-seconds remaining in overtime, Kanko poked in the rebound from defenseman Mark Ardelan's blast from the right point. Right wing Brad Smyth picked up an assist on the game-winning power play goal.
Brush (17-9-1) earned the win with 28 saves. Glass (1-4-0) took the loss stopping 24 shots..
Manchester went 2-for-8 on the power play. Binghamton was 1-for-5 with the man advantage.
The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins visit the Verizon Wireless Arena for the first and only time this season on Saturday, March 11 to face-off with the Monarchs at 7:35 p.m.
