Pirates Sneak Past Monarchs In Shootout

MANCHESTER, NH - The top two teams in the Atlantic Division went head-to-head and the outcome was decided in a shootout with the Portland Pirates narrowly edging the Manchester Monarchs 3-2 at the Verizon Wireless Arena in front of 6,827 fans on Wednesday night.

Manchester (22-10-1-4, 49 points) is tied for second place in the Atlantic Division with the Hartford Wolf Pack (21-10-2-5, 49 points). Portland (25-9-3-1, 54 points) is in first place in the Atlantic Division.

Returning to the Monarchs lineup for the first time since being recalled by the Los Angels Kings on December 16, right wing Petr Kanko got the fans going with his seventh goal of the season, shorthanded at 2:12 of the first period. Defenseman Marty Wilford flipped the puck up ice to Kanko who juggled the puck around two Pirates defenseman. Kanko gained full control of the puck and sent a rocket of a wrist shot from the left face-off dot and past Portland's goaltender Nathan Marsters on the glove side.

Left wing Curtis Glencross stepped out of the penalty box for the Pirates and right into a breakaway. Center Ryan Shannon passed the puck up ice to the streaking Glencross who connected with the puck just inside the Monarchs blueline. With no one between him and Monarchs goaltender Jason LaBarbera, Glencross whipped a wrist shot between LaBarbera's blocker and right pad for his 11th goal of the season. Glencross' shorthanded goal tied the game at 1-1 at 5:27 of the middle frame.

Marsters went behind the net to clear the puck and sent it up the boards. Left wing Jeff Tambellini stopped it near the left face-off circle and threw tossed the puck toward the crease. Center Connor James tipped the puck into the net to give the Monarchs a 2-1 lead. Defenseman Richard Seeley assisted James scored his 10th goal of the season at 8:35 of the final period by sending the puck behind the net.

The Pirates tied the game at 2-2 as they won the face-off deep in Monarchs territory. Center Aaron Gavey won the face-off against James, slipped the puck to Glencross, who flipped it to defenseman Maxim Kondratiev at the left point. Kondratiev threw a shot at the net and beat LaBarbera on the glove side at 14:40 of the third period.

The game was pushed to a shootout and left wing Noah Clarke was the only Monarchs player to get by Marsters. Right wing Pierre Parenteau and Gavey beat LaBarbera for the 3-2 shootout victory.

LaBarbera (0-0-1) took the loss with 33 saves. LaBarbera was sent to Manchester earlier in the day on a conditioning assignment. Marsters (12-5-0) earned the victory for Portland stopping 34 shots.

Manchester went 0-for-6 on the power play. Portland was 0-for-6 with the man advantage.

The Monarchs host the Lowell Lock Monsters at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday, January 13 at 7:35 p.m.
