Butenschon Named Starter on PlanetUSA All-Star Team

Today, the Manitoba Moose, in conjunction with the American Hockey League announced Manitoba Moose defenceman Sven Butenschon has been named a starter for the PlanetUSA AHL All-Star team for the 2006 Rbk Hockey AHL All-Star Classic to be held January 31st & February 1st at the MTS Centre.

Butenschon, 29, has already appeared in one AHL All-Star Classic in his career - back in 2002 when he was named a starter while with the Hamilton Bulldogs. So far this season with the Moose, the Winnipeg, MB native who was born in Itzahoe, Germany, has played in 37 games. He is second in goal-scoring amongst AHL defencemen with 11 goals and is ninth in scoring overall amongst AHL rearguards with 24 points. He is tops amongst league defencemen with nine powerplay goals.

In his 10-year pro career, Butenschon has played in 334 games in the AHL, scoring 64 goals and 133 assists for 197 points and 418 penalty minutes with Manitoba, Bridgeport, Hamilton, Wilkes-Barre, Houston, and Syracuse.

Butenschon was originally drafted by the Pittsburgh Penguins with their third choice, 57th overall, in the 1994 NHL Entry Draft.

Butenschon joins Manitoba Moose forward Jimmy Roy at the 2006 Rbk Hockey AHL All-Star Classic as Roy was earlier named the Playing Captain for the Canadian All-Star Team.
