Portland Pirates News Release

PORTLAND, ME - Today 19 ninth grade students at the Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound High School announced the creation of, "Pirate Productions Inc., a company of the Expeditionary Learning High School." The students also unveiled their company logo.

The logo, designed by student Christine Peddle, features vines around the original Pirates logo to represent their school's creative nature. Crackers the parrot, the Pirates long time mascot, is perched on Salty Pete's right shoulder to show the schools current relationship with the Portland Pirates.

The company has been created as part of the Junior Achievement (JA) Company Program that helps young people appreciate and better understand the role of business in their community. The JA Company Program, USM's Students in Free Enterprise (SIFE) the Portland Pirates have joined forces to teach students at the Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound High School the fundamentals of business and what takes place behind the scenes to present a Pirates game. Junior Achievement's Company Program and the Portland Pirates selected the Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound High School largely due to the school's design as a K-12 model for comprehensive school reform that emphasis high achievement through active learning, character growth, and team work. The program is being sponsored by Maine Bank & Trust, the official bank of the Portland Pirates.

SIFE was founded in 1975 and is active on more than 1,500 college and university campuses in 37 countries. SIFE is a nonprofit organization that works in partnership with business and higher education to provide students the opportunity to take what they are learning in the classroom and apply it to real-life situations, using their knowledge to better their communities through educational outreach projects. The USM program began in the spring of 2003 and has worked hard to become part of the Portland area since then.

Since the Pirates partnership began with Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound High School back on November 28, 2005, the students have created a business plan which includes plans for a pirate costume contest and a post-game skate with Pirates players on January 27th.

The students continue to work in teams with the Pirates front office staff and SIFE to sell and plan their game on January 27th. Students have been working with members of the Pirates staff to create a business strategy, a financial strategy, a production plan and a marketing plan with each area being overseen by a Pirates front office staff from their respective area. The students are working closely with their teachers and members of the Pirates staff on a wide range of functions covering everything from ticket prices to broadcasting the game on the radio.

Proceeds from the game will go back to support the Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound High School. The culmination of the project will be held on January 27th, 2006 when the students actually run the Pirates game against the Springfield Falcons. The students will be selling Main Deck tickets for $8, a savings of 50% off Box Office prices. Tickets for the Expeditionary Learning Outward Bound High School game can be purchased by calling (207) 828-4665 ext. 309 or ordering online at http://www.portlandpirates.com/ppinc/.
