DES MOINES, IA - The American Hockey League (AHL) today announced the 24-man PlanetUSA roster for the upcoming 2006 RBK Hockey AHL All-Star Classic at the MTS Centre in Winnipeg, Manitoba and the squad included Iowa Stars defenseman Matt Greene.
A native of Grand Ledge, Michigan, Greene was selected to the PlanetUSA roster by a committee of AHL coaches and is one of 19 first-time members on the PlanetUSA roster. The rookie defenseman has skated in 26 games for the Iowa Stars this season, notching two goals, five assists and 47 penalty minutes: 26(2/5/7)47. Both of his goals have come on special teams. His first professional goal came on the power-play on October 15th in Peoria, while his second pro tally, also against Peoria, came shorthanded on November 13th.
The first-year professional was drafted by the Edmonton Oilers with their fourth choice, 44th overall, in the 2002 NHL Entry Draft. The 6-3, 223-pound blueliner is currently on recall to Edmonton (NHL). He has appeared in four games, registering 15 penalty minutes, including his first NHL fight against NHL veteran Todd Simpson (1,331 career NHL PIM's) on January 3rd.
The PlanetUSA team is comprised of players born outside of Canada. The Canadian AHL All-Star Team will be announced on Thursday.
The 2006 Rbk Hockey AHL All-Star Classic will feature the top young talent in the American Hockey League, competing in the 2006 CCM AHL All-Star Skills Competition and the 2006 AHL All-Star Game, in an event to be televised nationally in the United States and Canada. Of the 364 players to take part in the AHL All-Star Classic since 1995, more than 93 percent have competed in the National Hockey League, including Patrice Bergeron, Pavol Demitra, Rick DiPietro, Patrik Elias, Miikka Kiprusoff, Kari Lehtonen, Ryan Miller, Martin St. Louis, Jason Spezza, Eric Staal, and Steve Sullivan.
The AHL All-Star Skills Competition, scheduled for a 7:00 PM (CT) start on Tuesday, January 31, will include players from the Canadian AHL All-Stars competing against players from the PlanetUSA AHL All-Stars, a team comprised of the league's top players born outside of Canada. The teams will compete in seven different events: Puck Control Relay, Fastest Skater, Rapid Fire, Hardest Shot, Accuracy Shooting, Pass and Score and Breakaway Relay.
NEXT THREE GAMES: The Iowa Stars are in Houston for games on Thursday and Friday before returning home to Wells Fargo Arena on Saturday, January 14th to host the Cleveland Barons.
