San Antonio Rampage News Release
SAN ANTONIO (Jan. 11, 2006) - The San Antonio Rampage today announced that their parent club, the Phoenix Coyotes, recalled defenseman Matthew Spiller from the American Hockey League team. In addition, the Rampage released right wing Brent Cullaton from his Professional Tryout Offer (PTO) and reassigned him to the Laredo Bucks, the Rampage's affiliate in the Central Hockey League (CHL).
Spiller, 22, has registered seven points (2-5=7) and a team-high 94 penalty minutes (PIM) in 36 games with the Rampage this season. Last year, the Daysland, Alberta native recorded 4-7-11 and 160 PIM in 79 games with the AHL's Utah Grizzlies to rank 2nd on the club in PIM and share the team lead among defensemen in goals.
Today's call-up is the first of the season for the 6-foot-5, 233-pound Spiller. Spiller played 51 games with the Coyotes during his first professional season of 2003-04. The Coyotes' second choice (2nd round, 31st overall) in the 2001 NHL Entry Draft did not figure in scoring and collected 54 PIM.
The 31-year-old Cullaton scored five points (3-2=5) in 22 games with the Rampage. The 6-foot, 220-pound forward has tallied 13 goals and 17 assists for 30 points with 20 penalty minutes in 72 career AHL games over parts of four seasons.
Cullaton, a native of Petawawa, Ontario, has been the Bucks' team captain since the 2003-04 season. At time of his call-up on Nov. 12, 2005, Cullaton had a seven-game point streak and sharing the CHL lead with 12 assists and 15 points. Cullaton has helped the Bucks reach the President's Cup Finals and has been selected to the starting lineup for the Southern Conference All-Star team each of the past two seasons.
The Rampage will hold a Salute to the Badges Night when they face the Toronto Marlies at the newly re-named AT&T Center Friday at 7 p.m. The team will wear specially designed jerseys that will be auctioned off to the public following the game with the proceeds benefiting the Alamo Area Fire and Police Memorial (AAFPM) wall. Individual and season ticket packages for the Rampage's 2005-06 season are on sale now. For ticket information, please call (210) 444-5050 or visit www.sarampage.com.
