Mariners Set Franchise Record, Extend Point Streak to Eight
January 13, 2023 - ECHL (ECHL)
Maine Mariners News Release
NORFOLK, VA - Keltie Jeri-Leon scored a pair of goals for the second game in a row and Mathew Santos recorded his 100th ECHL point as the Mariners defeated the Norfolk Admirals 3-2 on Friday night at the Norfolk Scope. With the win, the Mariners set a new franchise long point streak, of eight games.
Jeri-Leon struck twice in the first 4:13 to get the scoring started. First, at 3:42, his wrister from the high slot went top shelf, and then just 32 seconds later he ripped one home from the left face-off circle. Mitch Fossier picked up the primary helper on both goals. Jeri-Leon also scored twice on Wednesday. Maine led 2-0 after one.
The team traded goals in the middle frame. Recently acquired defenseman Billy Constantinou got Norfolk on the board with a power play goal at 6:59, when his shot from the point found its way past Mariners netminder Michael DiPietro. A quick response came from the Mariners, however, as Mathew Santos tipped home a Connor Doherty drive at 8:43. For Santos, it was the 100th point of his ECHL career. The Admirals outshot Maine 12-9 in the period, but the Mariners maintained their two-goal lead.
Norfolk made things interesting when Blake Murray found the net at 14:27 of the third, but the Mariners held on for the one-goal win. DiPietro stopped 22 of 24 to improve to 6-1-0 as a Mariner. It was Maine's fourth straight victory overall, a season-best streak. Their 12th road wins in 17 games matches last season's full 36-game total.
The Mariners (19-11-1-1) have one more in Norfolk on Saturday night at 6:05 PM. They'll then make stops in Reading (Monday) and Worcester (next Saturday) before returning home on Friday, January 27th, to open another three-game series with Norfolk. It begins with "Flannel Friday," presented by Three Dollar Dewey's, which is also the sponsor of the entire "3Kend," with games on the 28th and 29th as well.
