Falcons End Skid, Top Pirates In Shootout
January 17, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Springfield Falcons News Release
Lewiston, Maine - The Springfield Falcons (26-8-1-3) defeated the Portland Pirates by the final score of 4-3 in a shootout Friday night at Androscoggin Bank Colisee, snapping the team's three-game losing streak.
Cody Goloubef notched the shootout-winning goal in the bottom of the fifth round, beating Portland netminder Louis Domingue high on the blocker side. The Oakville, Ontario native, who was named to the 2014 AHL All-Star team, now leads all AHL defensemen with three shootout goals and two shootout winners this season.
Goloubef also notched the equalizer in the third period, firing a slap shot from the high slot that found its way into the back of the net. The tally was Goloubef's fifth of the season.
The Falcons held two separate leads before falling behind early in the third period. Cody Bass gave Springfield a 1-0 advantage at 8:41 of the first period, deflecting a Blake Parlett point shot in for his second goal of the season. Spencer Machacek buried home a centering feed from linemate Michael Chaput at 14:37 of the opening frame, putting the Falcons ahead by a 2-1 count.
Lucas Lessio evened the score twice for Portland, scoring at 10:17 of the first period and 14:13 of the second period. For Lessio, the goals were his 11th and 12th of the season.
Phil Lane gave the Pirates their first lead of the contest at 4:40 of the third period, putting the puck past Falcons goaltender Mike McKenna for his first goal of the season.
McKenna made 31 saves on 34 shots through regulation and overtime, while denying Portland on four of five of its shootout attempts. With the victory, the St. Louis native improved to 9-3-0 with a league-leading 1.79 goals-against average and .934 save percentage.
Domingue stopped 26 of 29 shots through 65 minutes and three of five shootout attempts in a losing effort, falling to 6-1-2 this season.
The Falcons went 0-for-3 on the power play, while Portland went 1-for-6 with the man advantage. Springfield leads the AHL with 90-percent success rate on the penalty kill.
Friday's win halted Springfield's three-game losing streak and improved the team's league-leading points percentage to .737.
