Pirates Face Falcons in First of Four at Colisee

January 17, 2014 - American Hockey League (AHL) - Portland Pirates News Release

Lewiston, ME - The Pirates return to the State of Maine for their next four games, beginning with a showdown with the Eastern Conference's second best team, the Springfield Falcons. Puck drops at 7 PM at the Androscoggin Bank Colisee.

The Pirates' last game was in Worcester on Sunday, where they dropped a 4-3 decision. Despite only dressing 17 skaters for the game due to injuries, the Pirates fought hard after falling into a 2 goal deficit in the first. Mathieu Brodeur got his first goal of the season, while Brett Hextall extended his scoring streak to 8 games. Jordan Martinook and Chris Brown also added tallies, but Worcester's lone third period goal was the game winner. Mark Visentin made 38 saves in the defeat.

Springfield last played on Sunday as well, a 2-1 defeat at the hands of the Norfolk Admirals. Dalton Smith had the lone goal for the Falcons, while goaltender Jeremy Smith made 26 saves in the defeat. Despite the regulation loss, Springfield remains the only team in the Eastern Conference with single digit regulation losses, having dropped only 8 games in regulation this season

The Falcons hold a 2-0 lead in the season series against the Pirates, with former Pirate goaltender Mike McKenna winning both contests. In the last game, the Falcons scored once in each period and McKenna made 26 saves en route to a 3-0 victory in Springfield. The loss was the only time that the Pirates have been shutout this season. Mark Visentin made 27 saves in the loss for the Pirates in 58 minutes of work, with the final Springfield goal coming on the empty net.
