SPRINGFIELD - Ben Street scored twice but the Binghamton Devils fell to the Springfield Thunderbirds inside MassMutual Center on Friday night, 5-3.
Springfield scored just 1:04 into the game to take an early 1-0 lead. Owen Tippett drove the net and after his first attempt, the puck went off his skate and in for his 11th goal of the year with the lone assist going to Ethan Prow.
Dryden Hunt added to the lead at the 4:02 mark of the first period. Tippett sent the puck out to Hunt who fired it by a diving Cory Schneider for a 2-0 lead. The goal was Hunt's third of the year with assists from Tippett and Riley Stillman.
Ben Street scored twice with the Devils trailing 2-0 to tie the game after one period. Street's ninth of the year came as he wired a wrist shot from the top of the circles by the right leg pad of goaltender Sam Montembeault to get the Devils within one at 5:45 of the first. Brett Seney and Dakota Mermis collected the assists on Street's first goal of the night.
The second goal of the period for Street came as he buried a Joey Anderson pass that came from below the goal line with 5:14 left in the first. Anderson and Josh Jacobs were given the helpers and the game was tied at two after the first period.
In the second period, defenseman Rob O'Gara blasted home his first goal of the season from the left-wing circle. Aleksi Saarela set up O'Gara with a great pass from below the goal line and the defenseman sent the puck over the left shoulder of Schneider for a one-goal lead at 9:23 of the second. The Devils trailed 3-2 after two period and held a 21-17 shot advantage.
In the third period, Anthony Greco scored on a breakaway at 4:19 and Thomas Schemitsch added to the lead on a delayed penalty at 14:37 for a 5-2 lead.
Ryan Schmelzer cut into the deficit with 3:28 left in regulation. Schmelzer fired in a Brandon Gignac pass for his second of the year and the Devils trailed 5-3. That was the final score as Schneider stopped 22 in the loss and Montembeault denied 30 in the win.
