Springfield Thunderbirds News Release

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. - The Springfield Thunderbirds (23-14-5-1) begin a two-game weekend against Atlantic Division foes on Friday night at the XL Center in Hartford for a tangle with the Wolf Pack (22-12-4-2).

The Thunderbirds are coming off a hard-fought 3-2 victory over the AHL's top team, the Utica Comets, on Wednesday night inside the MassMutual Center. Charlie Lindgren won his third consecutive start in the Springfield net, improving his personal record to 12-2-1 on the season. Lindgren finds himself in the top-10 among AHL goalies in wins, save percentage (.917), and goals-against average (2.47).

Through eight games of their 12-game season series, the T-Birds and Wolf Pack have split the matchups at four wins apiece. Springfield has yet to break through this season inside the XL Center in three prior visits this year. The T-Birds did capture victory in the last meeting between the clubs on Feb. 4 in Springfield, with captain Tommy Cross providing the overtime game-winner in a 3-2 T-Birds win.

After the Friday night I-91 matchup, the T-Birds return home and change their moniker to that of the Springfield Ice-O-Topes on Saturday night for a battle with the Providence Bruins (18-12-3-3) at 7:05 p.m. inside the Thunderdome. Springfield will sport specialty Ice-O-Topes jerseys, and various elements of the in-game experience will pay homage to Springfield's favorite cartoon family. Fans are invited to stay after the game for a live jersey auction.

Springfield and Providence have also had a nip-and-tuck season series, with each team winning three of the first six matchups against the opposition. The T-Birds came away with a 3-2 shootout win in the last meeting between the rivals on Jan. 29 on home ice. Lindgren picked up the win in that contest, and the veteran netminder has won each of his starts against the Bruins this season, allowing just three goals over 125 minutes of action.
