Toledo Walleye News Release
The Storm extended the team's win streak to five games with the victories this weekend over Wheeling (4-3) and Cincinnati (3-2). Those two wins extended the team's unbeaten in regulation streak to seven. Both of these streaks were snapped with the Storm's 6-0 loss to Dayton on Sunday.
The victories on Friday and Saturday night were both at the Toledo Sports Arena. The Storm has now won five consecutive games at home and has a 5-0-0 at the Sports Arena this season.
Rookie goaltender Brian Finley started the Storm's game on Friday night against the Wheeling Nailers and played the first 28:11 in the game. He faced twelve shoots and made twelve stops. Finley was removed from the game due to recurring groin tension.
When goaltender Brian Finley left Friday night's game, the Storm was leading by a score of 4-0, and the team ended up winning, 4-3. Therefore, Finley was in net at the time that the game winning goal was scored, and he was credited with the win. This marked the second time in a row that Finley started a game, was taken out before the half-way mark, and still earned a win. Finley is currently 4-0-0 in his professional career.
Brian Finley's 1.82 goals against average places him third among the goaltenders in the ECHL. His .938 save percentage is also third in the league.
After Friday night's game, Brian Finley was placed on the seven day injured reserve. Assistant Coach, Mark Bernard, who had a record-setting season as the Storm's goaltender in 2000-01, was activated as an emergency back-up for Saturday night's game against the Cincinnati Cyclones.
The Storm scored four goals in the first period of Friday night's game against Wheeling. That marked the most goals scored in a single period by the Storm this season.
Four different players scored for the Storm on Friday night: Erik Anderson, Nick Parillo, Mike Bayrack, and Grady Moore. This game represented the fourth consecutive home game that the Storm had scored a team total of four goals. In only one of those four games did one player score more than one goal. (That player was Erik Anderson, who scored two goals in the 4-1 victory over the Dayton Bombers at the Sports Arena on Saturday, October 19).
By scoring four goals in the first period on Friday night, the Storm extended their positive goal differential with respect to the opponent in the first period to a (+9) (10-1), i.e. the Storm had outscored the opponent ten to one in the first period to that point of the season. (The Storm gave up a goal to the Dayton Bombers in the first period of Sunday's 6-0 loss to the Bombers. To date, Toledo has outscored the opposition 10-2 in the first period.)
Toledo's Erik Anderson scored the first goal of the game on Friday night. That was Anderson's second first-goal of the season for the Storm. With that goal, Anderson extended his point streak with Toledo to six games, i.e. he has at least one point in all six games that he has played with the Storm this season.
After Friday night's game, Erik Anderson was re-called to the Milwaukee Admirals of the American Hockey League. Anderson is the first Storm player to be called up to the AHL this season.
In both Friday night's 4-3 win over Wheeling and Saturday's 3-2 win over Cincinnati, the Storm scored the game's first goal. Toledo currently has a perfect 6-0-0 record when scoring first.
Nick Parillo scored the second goal of the game for the Storm on Friday night. That was Parillo's fourth goal of the season, which places him in a tie for third in goals scored by first year players. Parillo's seven points (4g-3a=7pts) places him seventh in the rookie point race.
Mike Bayrack scored his third goal of the season-and his second in two games-for the Storm in Friday night's game.
Grady Moore scored his second goal of the season for the Storm on Friday night. Both of Moore's goals this season were scored while the Storm was on the power play. Moore's goal turned out to be the game winner. That was the first game winning goal of Moore's professional career.
Alexandre Jacques picked up two assists in Friday night's win. That was the second multi-point performance for Jacques this season. (He also had a goal and an assist in the Storm's season opening 4-3 win over Peoria on October 11). Last season, Jacques had fifteen multi-point games with the Storm.
The Wheeling Nailers scored three goals in the third period on Friday night. That marked the first time this season that the Storm has given up as many as three goals in a single period. (The Dayton Bombers also scored three goals in the second period in defeating the Storm 6-0 on Sunday, October 27).
On both Friday and Saturday night, the Storm's games were decided by one goal. Toledo currently has a record of 3-0-1 in one-goal games.
In Saturday night's 3-2 win over Cincinnati, the Storm's Matt Eldred scored the game's first goal. That was Eldred's first goal (and first point) for the Storm this season.
On Saturday night, after scoring the game's first goal, the Storm gave up consecutive goals to the Cyclones to fall behind 2-1. That represented the first (and, to date, only) time that the Storm has trailed at the Toledo Sports Arena.
In the 3-2 win over Cincinnati on Saturday, the Storm's Wes Mason scored back-to-back power play goals 2:17 apart midway into the third period. That marked the first time this season for the Storm that one player has scored more than one goal in a period. It was also the first time that a Storm player scored more than one power play goal in a single game.
Wes Mason's second goal on Saturday night-at 12:22 of the third period-was Mason's first game winning goal of the season. Last season, Mason had three game winners for the Augusta Lynx in the ECHL. He also scored a game winning goal for the Grand Rapids Griffins in the American Hockey League in a 1-0 win over the Milwaukee Admirals on March 2, 2002. (Of course, current Storm Head Coach, Claude Noel, was the assistant coach for Milwaukee on that night.).
All three goals scored by the Storm on Saturday night were scored while the team had the man advantage. That marked the first time this season that the Storm has scored three power play goals in a single game.
Saturday night's come from behind victory for the Storm marked the second time (in two tries) that the Storm had entered the third period trailing the opponent and come away with at least a point. (On October 12, the Storm entered the third period trailing the Johnstown Chiefs, 3-1, only to tie things at four late in the third period, but eventually lose in overtime.) (On Sunday evening, in the 6-0 loss to Dayton, the Storm entered the third period trailing 4-0; but was not able to muster the comeback in that game.)
Saturday's game marked the first time that the Storm was outshot by the opponent (29-26). (The Storm was also outshot on Sunday by the Dayton Bombers, 42-35.)
The Storm averages 35.88 shots on the opponent's goal per game. This ranks the Storm third overall in the ECHL in this category.
The six goals given up by the Storm in the 6-0 loss to the Dayton Bombers on Sunday is the highest single game total given up by the Storm in this season. Toledo has given up a total of 22 goals in the team's eight games, establishing a team goals against average at 2.75, which places the Storm tied for sixth in that category league-wide.
Prior to Sunday's game, Assistant Coach Mark Bernard was deactivated as the Storm's emergency back-up goaltender, when the team signed goaltender Marty Fillion. On Sunday, Fillion came on in substitution of Doug Teskey with 11:31 remaining in the game. Fillion made five stops on the five shots he saw in that contest.
The Storm was shutout for the first time on Sunday. Toledo has scored 26 goals in eight games over the course of the season. That represents a 3.25 goals/game average, which is fourteenth out of the 27 teams in the ECHL.
The Storm gave up two short-handed goals to the Dayton Bombers on Sunday. That was the first time this season that Toledo has given up multiple short-handed goals in a single game. The Storm is one of five teams that have now allowed three short-handed goals against this season.
In Sunday's game, Nick Parillo was assessed 17 penalty minutes: a two-minute minor for cross-checking, a five minute major for fighting, and a ten minute misconduct. That is the highest single game penalty minute total for any Storm player this season. Parillo has currently accumulated more penalty minutes (40) than any other rookie in the league, and he is tied for the lead in major penalties amongst first year players with four.
In the games this weekend, Storm defenseman, Matt Eldred, was assessed a total of five minor penalties. Eldred has now been sent to the box thirteen times for minors, more than any other player in the league.
The Storm penalty killing unit killed off eighteen of the nineteen power play chances for the opponents this weekend.
Toledo's PK blanked both the Wheeling (0-6) and Dayton (0-7) power play units this weekend. In the eight games for the Storm thus far this season, the team's penalty killing unit has shutout the opposition's power play four times.
The Storm's penalty killing unit has allowed only two power play goals against in the last forty-one chances. Overall, the PK has killed off forty-nine of the fifty-three opportunities for the opposition with the man advantage-a 92.45% kill ratio, which is third league.
In all three games this weekend, the Storm penalty killing unit faced a two-skater disadvantage. On Friday night, the Nailers had 1:37 worth of 5-on-3 mid-way into the third period; on Saturday night, the Cyclones had 1:43 worth of 5-on-3 in the latter stages of the second; and on Sunday evening, the Bombers had 0:22 of 5-on-3 in the third period. The Storm PK has now had to defend against the two-skater disadvantage eleven times this season and is yet to give up a goal in this situation.
The Storm's power play unit was unable to score in eleven chances against the Dayton Bombers on Sunday. Over the course of the three games this past weekend, the Storm scored four power play goals in twenty-one chances. Overall, the Storm's PP this season has scored 9 goals with the man advantage in fifty five chances-a 16.36% scoring ratio, which is twentieth in the league.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Wes Mason (2g-1a=3pts, -2, 1 game winning goal, 2 power play goals) Wes Mason scored two extremely important goals for the Storm this weekend. With the team trailing 2-1 to the Cincinnati Cyclones mid-way into the third period on Saturday night, Wes scored back-to-back power play goals to propel the team into the lead and on to the ultimate victory. In doing so, Wes became the first Storm player to score two goals in a single period, as well as the first player to score two power play goals in a single game.
