A Tale of Two Weeks

October 28, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
San Diego Gulls News Release

SAN DIEGO - The San Diego Gulls (3-3-1) started the season with three straight wins and were flying high. But after four straight losses, they've quickly come crashing down. San Diego began the week with a win in Bakersfield, but proceeded to lose twice to the Idaho Steelheads (once in a shootout) and once each to the Long Beach Ice Dogs and Condors.

The Blue and Orange are in second place, eight points behind the front-running Steelheads... The Gulls' 3-3-1 start is the worst in franchise history. The previous low was a 3-2-2 start in 1998-99... San Diego is 1 for its last 31 on the power play... In their four game winless streak, the Gulls have netted only five goals. In their three wins, the Gulls tallied 15 times... Sandro Sbrocca, Clint Cabana and Dennis Mullen rank 1-3 respectively in West Coast Hockey League penalty minutes...

TRANSACTIONS:

Joe Bianchi was activated from injured reserve Sunday, but has yet to play in a regular season game... Clint Cabana re-injured his right shoulder and was placed on the 14-day IR... The Gulls signed forward Ryan Fultz, who made his San Diego debut Sunday... Sylvain Deschatelets was sent down from the American Hockey League's Hershey Bears and will join the club Tuesday in Fresno... Marc Busenburg and Rob Voltera remain in Hershey...

COMMUNITY UPDATE: Nov. 1: Make-A-Wish "Jerseys Off Their Backs" night. For one night and one night only, the Gulls will don special "Make a Wish" jerseys as they host Idaho. A silent auction will be held on the concourse during the game, and the winners of each jersey will be announced during the third period. All proceeds will benefit the San Diego Make-A-Wish Foundation. The goal for the evening is to raise enough money to grant three San Diego area children their wish.

Nov. 7: Steve Martinson will be on the on the NBC 7/39 morning show to discuss the upcoming Arthritis Foundation's fundraiser. A representative from the Arthritis Foundation will be conducting the interview.

Nov. 9: As the Gulls take on the Steelheads, the Arthritis Foundation and its supporters will be in the building celebrating the end of a massive fundraising effort. The Gulls and the Arthritis Foundation have partnered to raise a significant amount of money for the ongoing research the foundation conducts. In addition, the evening will be dedicated to raising awareness on Arthritis, the nation's number one cause of disability.

Nov. 9: Recycle Night with the Gulls is back. Come to the Sports Arena with 10 bottles and/or cans and receive a two-for-one voucher to the game that night. In addition you will also be entered into a drawing for a Gulls team autographed stick! Vouchers can be collected at the City of San Diego Environmental Services booth outside the North Entrance. Remember, "It's Good for the Bottle, It's Good for the Can!"

LAST WEEK:

GULLS 0, Idaho 2; at Idaho, Tuesday, Oct. 22: Joy Rybar's power-play goal late in the second period was the difference as the Steelheads went on to blank the Gulls 2-0. Blair Allison's shutout was the third of his career against the Blue and Orange. The Gulls had their chances, but a stingy Idaho defense and weak San Diego power play kept them off the scoreboard.

GULLS 2, Idaho 3 (SO); at Idaho, Wednesday, Oct. 23: San Diego's power outage continued with eight more failed chances with the man advantage as Idaho squeaked its way to a 3-2 shootout win. Dennis Mullen and Clayton Read each scored his first goal in a Gulls uniform, but in the end it wasn't enough.

GULLS 2, Long Beach 3; at Long Beach, Saturday, Oct. 26: The Gulls jumped out to a 1-0 lead, but the Ice Dogs answered back with three straight en route to their first victory of the year. Mark Pederson's goal late in the third period made it interesting, but Mike Buzak and company shut the door from there.

GULLS 1, Bakersfield 7; at San Diego, Sunday, Oct. 27: Bakersfield scored six straight goals during the first and second periods and cruised to the easy 7-1 win. Christian Skoryna and Paul Willett led the way with three points apiece. The Gulls didn't register their first shot on goal until midway through the first period.
