Bombers Fall Twice, Then Snap Skid with 6-0 Home Win

October 28, 2002 - ECHL (ECHL)
Dayton Bombers News Release

The Dayton Bombers Professional Hockey Team scored only one goal in a pair of losses to Lexington on Friday and Saturday, then erupted for six scores in a Nutter Center victory over the first-place Toledo Storm on Sunday to snap a five-game losing streak. The Bombers have three more games this weekend, beginning with a home tilt Friday vs. Peoria (7:30 p.m.).

Below is a recap of this past week's games:

10/25/02- Lexington 2 @ BOMBERS 1

Despite outshooting the Men O' War 38-24, the Bombers would be edged by Lexington, which recorded its first win as an ECHL franchise on a late power play goal eventually credited to defenseman Kevin Knopp. Both teams exchanged goals earlier in the contest. Fraser Clair gave the Men O'War a 1-0 lead at 10:22 of the first, but Matt Dzieduszycki responded for the Bombers 2:59 into the middle period with an unassisted tally. The Bombers finished 0 for 9 on the power play. Dan Murphy made 37 saves for the winners.

10/26/02- BOMBERS 0 @ Lexington 2

A scoreless duel was broken 2:26 into the third period on a power play score by Lexington's Mark Smith. Then, the unthinkable happened. With Bombers' netminder Shane Bendera pulled for an extra attacker, Lexington goalie Mike Smith sent a shot all the way down the ice from behind the Men O' War goal line. The puck sailed into the net, making Mike Smith the sixth goalie in ECHL history to score. Smith made 21 saves in the game. The Bombers finished 0 for 5 on the power play.

10/27/02- Toledo 0 @ BOMBERS 6

The Bombers avenged a road loss to Toledo earlier this month by breaking through on the score sheet with six goals. Matt Dzieduszycki led the attack with a pair of short-handed goals, while Jamie Ling, Andrew Williamson, Mike Renzi, and Ryan Vince all turned on the red light. For the latter three players, the goals marked their first of 2002-2003 regular season. Rookie Shane Bendera earned his first professional shutout with a 35 save performance, while the Bombers were successful on all 11 penalty kills. The Bombers dealt Toledo its first regulation loss of the season and knocked starting goalie Doug Teskey out of the game after their sixth goal.

BOMBER BITES: Matt Dzieduszycki became the second Bomber ever to score two short-handed goals in a game on Sunday versus Toledo. Current Bombers center Jamie Ling performed the feat on January 15, 1999 in a five-goal, seven point performance at the Nutter Center against the Roanoke Express ... It was the eighth time in Bombers' history that the team netted two man-down goals in a game ... Rookie forward Mike Renzi scored his first professional goal in the Bombers' 6-0 victory vs. Toledo on Sunday ... The Bombers will begin their first multi-game road stretch (5) of the season this weekend on Saturday at Johnstown against the Chiefs ... Sunday's game at Wheeling will mark the last of 11 straight games to start the season against Northwest Division foes.
