The RailRiders jumped ahead in the third inning on a solo home run from Alvarez against IronPigs starter Michael Mariot. Alvarez is now 4-for-13 with two long balls against Lehigh Valley this season. Mariot pitched six innings of one-run ball and five punchouts for his fourth quality start of the campaign. After JP Sears retired the first 13 IronPigs to start the game, Lehigh Valley strung together a three-hit rally with two outs to take a 3-1 lead in the fifth. NEWS & NOTES

FIRST THINGS FIRST - The Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders welcome back the Lehigh Valley IronPigs for their second series at PNC Field this season. The RailRilders had won the first two games of the set back in April before dropping the final four in a row for their third-straight series loss. This will be the final trip to this ballpark this season for the IronPigs.

D-D-DOUBLE UP - The RailRiders will play in their sixth doubleheader of the season today due to a rainout on Wednesday. So far in doubleheaders Scranton/Wilkes-Barre has gone 3-7. After sweeping their first doubleheader of the year against Syracuse on April 8, they have gone 1-7 with their only win coming against the Norfolk Tides on April 17 (1-0 walkoff). This will be their second doubleheader against Lehigh Valley this year (April 29).

WEB HEAD - Ryan Weber gets the ball in game one tonight. Weber has been limited to just three appearances with the RailRiders this season due to a 22-day stint on the COVID IL. So far in 9.0 IP, he has allowed just two earned runs against Syracuse and Norfolk.

HERE'S JHONY - Jhony Brito is slated to make his Triple-A debut in game two tonight. He is currently the 24th ranked prospect in the Yankees system according to Baseball America. Prior to his final outing with Double-A Somerset in which he gave up six earned runs in 5.2 IP, he had not surrendered more than two earned runs in any one outing in seven-straight games. He has never given up more than three walks in any game in his 68 game career.

OLD FRIEND ALERT - Multiple sources have confirmed that the parent club of the Lehigh Valley IronPigs, the Philadelphia Phillies, have let go big league manager Joe Girardi today. Rob Thomson will serve as interim manager. Girardi managed the Yankees from 2008-2017 and had been the manager of the Phillies since 2020. The Phillies went 22-29 under his guidance this season.

NURSING - The RailRiders had not encountered a Major League rehabber either for or against all season until Tuesday when the contest featured three. Tim Locastro returned to the RailRiders and is rehabbing a back strain. With the IronPigs, Didi Gregorius is back from a left knee sprain and Rafael Marchan is rehabbing a left hamstring strain (played four games with Jersey Shore).

WHERE YA GOIN? - Tuesday, Estevan Florial was caught stealing twice at second base by Rafael Marchan. It was the first time in Florial's career that he had been caught stealing multiple times in one game. He had entered the game having been caught stealing just twice all season in 15 tries. No RailRider had been caught stealing twice in one game all season. The last RailRider to get caught stealing twice in one game was Matt Pita on July 20, 2021 against the Rochester Red Wings (vs catcher Jakson Reetz).

MOVE AND GROOVE - Wednesday, SWB reliever Shelby Miller was released by the New York Yankees from his Minor League contract. Josh Maciejewski was transferred to Double-A Somerset with Jhony Brito being promoted from the Patriots. Estevan Florial was appointed as the Yankees' "27th Man" then returned yesterday. Jimmy Cordero was activated from the 7-Day Injured List. David McKay was optioned to SWB.

STREAKY - Derek Dietrich's nine-game on base streak was snapped on Thursday... José Mujica has not been charged with a run in six-straight SWB appearances (appeared for Somerset in-between)... Vinny Nittoli has not been charged with a run in five-straight relief appearances... Trevor Lane and Greg Weissert have not been charged with a run in three-straight appearances...

ON DECK - Tomorrow is our first Copa de la Diversión game as the RailRiders will play as the Vejigantes. The first 2,500 fans through the gates will receive a Vejigantes' Pint Glass, presented by La Tolteca.

AROUND THE ORGANIZATION - The New York Yankees (36-15) swept the doubleheader and the series against the Los Angeles Angels yesterday. Jameson Taillon flirted with perfection into the eighth inning in game two. Nestor Cortes lowered his ERA to 1.50 in game one. The Yankees continue their homestand tonight against the Detroit Tigers at 7:05 PM with Gerrit Cole taking on Elvin Rodriguez... The Somerset Patriots (30-17) and Binghamton Rumble Ponies split Thursday night's doubleheader as the Rumble Ponies took game one 5-3 and the Patriots took game two 6-4. Chad Bell launched his fifth home run of the year in game two. Rodolfo Duran drove in a pair with a double. The series continues tonight at 7:05 PM with Luis Medina on the hill... The Hudson Valley Renegades (21-26) dropped a heartbreaker to the Aberdeen IronBirds 2-1 on Thursday night. The IronBirds scored twice in the eighth, bringing an end to a 19.2 inning shutout streak by the Renegades' pitching staff dating back to Tuesday night. Blas Castaño takes the ball tonight at 7:05 PM... The Tampa Tarpons (21-27) lost in walkoff fashion to the Fort Myers Mighty Mussels 7-6 on Thursday. Leading 6-3, the Tarpons surrendered three runs in the bottom of the ninth and allowed the winning run to score on a pop-out double play in the tenth. Richard Fitts and the Tarpons look to bounce back tonight at 7:00 PM...
