June 3, 2022 - International League (IL)
Toledo Mud Hens News Release
(COLUMBUS, OH): After a slugfest defeat for the Mud Hens in last night's outing, Toledo looked to even the series in Columbus, as they took on the Clippers for game four. RHP Garrett Hill took the mound for the Mud Hens, with Detroit's prospect CF Riley Greene out in center field, continuing his rehab assignments with Toledo.
The Mud Hens drew first blood, as SS Zack Short led off the ball game with a single. After 2B Jamie Westbrook would hit into a fielder's choice, LF Trayce Thompson would hit a double to drive in Westbrook, giving the Hens a 1-0 lead. However, heading into the bottom of the first, the Clippers answered back with three runs, giving Columbus a 3-1 lead. The Clippers would tally another run in the bottom of the second with a bases loaded walk, earning RHP Garrett Hill four runs in his first two innings.
After the four unanswered runs, it would take the Mud Hens until the fourth inning to answer back. 2B John Valente would hit an RBI double, with RF Brendon Davis scoring the run. Valente has now reached base 13 times out of the last 17 games. His third double of the year made it a 4-2 ballgame, still in favor of the Clippers.
After a struggle through the first two innings from Hill, he would settle down by tallying a total of six strikeouts in his four innings of work. He would also strike three batters in a row, during his stretch of settling down. Then, the Mud Hens would follow up with a few more runs scored. In the top of the fifth, CF Riley Greene led off the inning with a double. Two batters later, DH Ryan Lavarnway tallied his 22nd RBI on a groundball, scoring Greene, making it a 4-3 game. With two outs, RF Brendon Davis hit a two-out double to left. Davis was 3-3 at this point in the game. 1B Josh Lester would follow up with a double (14) of his own, tying the game at four apiece. Lester now has a total of 26 RBIs, this season. Then, C Dustin Garneau would join the 10-RBI club, hitting his fourth home run of the year, giving the Mud Hens their second lead of the game (6-4). Unfortunately for the Hens, the Clippers answered back two more runs to tie it in the bottom half (6-6).
The Clippers would tally four more unanswered runs, as they won another slugfest, with a score of 10-6. The Clippers now lead the series, 3-1. Despite the loss, the Mud Hens had four batters with multi-hit games. CF Riley Greene and C Dustin Garneau had two hits, along with LF Trayce Thomspon tallying three, and RF Brendon Davis snagging four.
