Charlotte Knights News Release

(UPTOWN CHARLOTTE, NC) - The Charlotte Knights dropped game three of the six-game series against the Memphis Redbirds by a score of 9-7 in 10 innings on Thursday night from Truist Field in Uptown Charlotte. The two teams went into extra innings tied, 6-6, but the Redbirds exploded for three runs in the top of the 10th inning to go on for the win.

Despite the game three loss, the Knights battled all night long against the Redbirds. First baseman Yermín Mercedes hit a 458-foot home run, a two-run blast in the first inning of the game. His home run gave the Knights an early 2-0 lead in the contest. The Knights continued to tack on to the lead and scored a run in each of the next two innings.

The Redbirds battled back in the top of the fifth inning and scored five runs against the Charlotte bullpen. Memphis sluggers Cory Spangenberg and Alec Burleson both homered in the fifth inning to give the Redbirds a 5-4 lead. The Knights came back to tie the game in the bottom half of the fifth inning thanks to a solo home run from left fielder Blake Rutherford. The home run, a solo shot, was Rutherford's sixth of the season.

One inning later, right fielder Mark Payton gave the Knights a 6-5 lead thanks to an RBI single to right field. It was Charlotte's last lead of the game.

The Redbirds charged back to score four runs over the final two innings of the game to win for the second time in as many days. First, the Redbirds tied the game in the top of the ninth on an RBI single from Burleson. In the 10th, Evan Mendoza doubled home two runs and Ben DeLuzio singled home another run to give the Redbirds a 9-6 lead and ultimately a 9-7 win.

The Knights will continue the series against the Memphis Redbirds (Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals) on Friday night with a 7:04 p.m. game from Uptown Charlotte. The game can also be heard live on 730 The Game ESPN Charlotte and www.CharlotteKnights.com. The "Voice of the Charlotte Knights" Matt Swierad and long-time broadcaster Mike Pacheco will have the call for all of the action.
