Royals Continue Dominance over Southern Conference

Reading Royals News Release


The Reading Royals continued their hot play at home this week winning back-to-back games against the current Kelly Cup Champion, Greenville Grrrowl. Reading topped Greenville Friday night in the Sovereign Center, 7-2. The Royals seven goals was the most scored by Reading since the home opener on October 11, 2002 in a 7-3 victory over Wheeling. Saturday, the Royals held off the Grrrowl 4-3, remaining perfect when leading after two periods of play (14-0-0).

This week the Royals go on the road Friday for their final meeting with the Wheeling Nailers in Wheeling. Saturday, the Royals return home to take on the Greensboro Generals for the final time this season and finish the week against the Roanoke Express on Sunday afternoon.

Friday, January 17 @ Wheeling Wheeling Civic Center 7:30PM

GAME NOTES: This is the first meeting of the New Year and first in 48 days between Reading and Wheeling. Reading is a perfect 4-0-0 against Wheeling this season. This is the final meeting between these two clubs in Wheeling. The Royals and Nailers will meet one more time in Reading on March 7.

Saturday, January 18 vs. Greensboro Sovereign Center 7:05PM

GAME NOTES: The Royals and Generals met in back-to-back games in Greensboro to start the New Year. Reading split with Greensboro, winning 5-3 January 2 while losing 5-1 on January 3. This is the final meeting of the season between these two Northeast Division rivals.

Sunday, January 19 vs. Roanoke Sovereign Center 5:05PM

GAME NOTES: The Reading Royals finally broke through with their first victory this season against the Express in their last meeting on January 5, 2003. Reading won 5-4 with a wild third period of play, which saw each team score three goals. Reading is now 1-3-0 versus Roanoke this season and 2-7-0 all-time.

Friday, January 10 vs. Greenville Sovereign Center 7:05PM

GAME NOTES: Ten Royals figured into the scoring as Reading beat Greenville 7-2 in the first ever meeting. The Royals were led by All Star Brad Rooney and Alex Kim who each tallied a goal and two assists. Jeff Sanger picked up his eighth win in nine tries stopping 33 shots. The Royals seven goals matched a season high at home.

Saturday, January 11 vs. Greenville Sovereign Center 7:05PM

GAME NOTES: The Royals beat Greenville on Saturday, 4-3. All Stars Brian McCullough (1g, 2a) and Brad Rooney led the way (1g, 1a, GW) for Reading. Steve Rymsha added a goal and an assist as well. Reading improved to .500 at home with the win.

The 2nd year pro is not suffering from the sophomore jinx. Rooney was impressive against the defending Kelly Cup Champs leading his team to two victories posting two goals and five points, including two game winning goals. Rooney also picked up his 100th professional point and matched his point total from his rookie season in just his 41st game this season (52 pts.). Rooney has posted at least a point in five-straight games since returning from injury on January 2, 2003.
