Eight Game Explosion Caps Perfect Week
January 13, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Fresno Falcons News Release
The Fresno Falcons swept their opposition last week as they strung together a season-high five-game win streak, which included three victories over the Anchorage Aces that each netted at least seven goals.
Fresno began the week on Tuesday in Alaska where they beat the Aces, 7-6 in a shootout, after trailing, 5-1, in the second period. The next evening the Falcons scored a then season-high seven goals in regulation to defeat Anchorage again, 7-3. The club then traveled back to California for showdowns with the Bakersfield Condors and Long Beach Ice Dogs whom they beat, 3-1, on Friday and, 4-1, on Saturday, respectively.
A stretch of three games in three days and five in six culminated yesterday with another tilt against the Aces at Selland Arena. Following a ho-hum first period after which they trailed, 2-1, the Falcons exploded for their most prolific period of hockey in three years. They scored six times in the second period to tie a franchise record on their way to a new season-high eight goals on the night in an 8-6 victory.
Fresno's 10-point week shot them up the standings to within one point of the third-place Bakersfield Condors with one game in hand. The fourth-place Falcons enter this week with a mark of 17-12-4 and 38 points.
FOUR GAMES AT SELLAND THIS WEEK
Fresh off a six-game road trip on which the team went 4-1-1, the Falcons commenced a five-game home stand last night with their victory against Anchorage. The same two teams will battle again this Tuesday night at Selland Arena beginning at 7 p.m. The game is a Carl's Jr. Two-for-Tuesday with two-for-one ticket coupons available at participating Carl's Jr. Restaurants.
The home stand draws to its conclusion with three games this coming weekend. A Taylor Cup Finals re-match from last spring is on tap for Friday and Saturday as the first-place Idaho Steelheads come to town. Both games begin at 7:30 p.m. with the first 1,500 fans receiving Tankard Mugs on Friday and Sports Bags on Saturday. The team's second straight three-games-in-three-days weekend ends on Sunday, Jan. 19, at 5 p.m. with the arrival of the Long Beach Ice Dogs.
Tickets for all four games are still available at the Selland box office, all Ticketmaster outlets and online at www.ticketmaster.com.
PRACTICE SCHEDULE
The Falcons will hold their pre-game morning skate tomorrow at 10 a.m. at Selland. Wednesday's practice is scheduled for 11:15 a.m. at Gateway Ice Center and Thursday's will be held at Gateway at 4:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday's pre-game skates are at 10 a.m. each day at Selland. There will not be a pre-game morning skate prior to Sunday's game.
