
Men O\' War Close in on Cyclones, Gear up for Storm

Lexington, KY- The Men O' War went 2-1-0 on the weekend. Peoria ended Lexington's eight-game home unbeaten streak on Friday with a 4-3 win. On Saturday, Lexington downed Johnstown 5-4 in a shootout. On Sunday Lexington crept to within four points of third place by beating the Cincinnati Cyclones 4-1. The defending Kelly Cup Champion Greenville Grrrowl, make their first ever visit to Rupp Arena on Friday. The MOW hit the road on Saturday for a match-up with the Toledo Storm.
Friday, January 10th âPeoria 4 at Lexington 3
The Peoria Rivermen ended the MOW's home unbeaten streak with at 4-3 win on Friday. Tyler Rennette and Randy Copley each scored twice as the Rivermen won their fourth consecutive decision. Peoria extended its season record to 4-1 vs. the Men O' War. Jared Smyth scored twice for the MOW. Mark Smith scored his 16th goal in the loss.
Saturday, January 11thâ Lexington 5 at Johnstown 4
Lexington picked up a 5-4 shootout win Saturday night in Johnstown. Mike Smith stopped all four shooters he faced in the shootout for the win. Mark Smith, Marc-Andre Thinel, Alex Mathieu, and Jay Banach all scored in regulation. Thinel scored with 2:55 left to send the game to overtime. Thinel also scored the clinching shootout goal. Van Burgess and Joe Vandermeer picked up two assists in the teams' sixth road win of the year. The game featured four lead changes.
Sunday, January 12th- Cincinnati1 at Lexington 4
Lexington edged to within three points of the third place Cincinnati Cyclones with a 4-1 win. Alex Mathieu, Mike Sgroi, and Ryan Fultz each had a goal and an assist as Lexington picked up their 18th win of the season. Mathieu opened the scoring with a power play tally. Jay Banach added to the lead early in the second with his second goal in as many nights. Lexington made it a 3-1 lead early in the third with Mike Sgroi's ninth goal of the season. Ryan Fultz would add another goal late in the third for the 4-1 final. Lexington killed off six of seven Cyclone power plays. Mike Smith played well in net stopping 26 of 27 shots. Sgroi's, Mathieu's, and Fultz's goals all came on the power play.
UPCOMING GAMES......
The Men O' War face the defending Kelly Cup Champions on Friday when the Greenville Grrrowl visit Lexington. The Grrrowl begin the week at 16-20-3 and in fifth place in the Southeast Division. Matt Demarksi (14g, 21a) and Tyler Deis (11g, 24a) lead the Grrrowl in scoring with 35 points each. The meeting is the first ever between the Grrrowl and the MOW. It is also the only scheduled meeting between the two this season. The match-up comes in the middle of a stretch when the MOW play 11 of 12 games against Northwest Division opponents. On Saturday, the MOW load up the bus and head for Toledo. The game is the fourth match-up of the year between the MOW and the Northwest Division leaders. The Storm have won two of three so far against the Men. The MOW's lone win came in the last meeting on December 13 at Rupp Arena. Lexington won 3-1. Mike Smith was outstanding in net stopping 34 of 35 shots. Brett Draney, Ben Storey and Van Burgess scored the goals for the MOW.
MOW TRACKS...
The MOW are 11-6-3 at Rupp Arena this season. Before Lexington's 7-0-1 streak at Rupp, the Men were 4-5-2 at home...Mike Sgroi leads the Northern Conference with 16 major penalties...Mike Smith ranks 6th in the ECHL with a 2.54 goals against average... Lexington is 13-0-1 when leading after two periods...Saturday's shootout win in Johnstown marked the third straight shootout the MOW have won. On the season, Lexington is 5-2 in shootouts...Jared Smyth's two goal effort on Friday was his second two-goal game of the season..
