
Pair Help Rivermen Extend Streak

Winning three road games in three cities in three nights, Peoria extended its winning streak to a season-best six games and remained undefeated in 2003. The Rivermen have 52 points and are 25-10-2, four points behind leader Toledo in the Northwest Division. Peoria has won nine of its last 10 and 12 of its last 14 games, including 6-1 on the road to improve to 14-8-1 and 6-1 at home to improve to 11-2-1.
The six-game winning streak ties Peoria with Pee Dee for the longest active winning streak in the East Coast Hockey League. The longest winning streak of 2002-03 is seven games by Toledo (Dec. 14-Jan. 3) and Florida (Dec. 15-31). Peoria has the longest active home winning streak at six games while its three-game road winning streak is the second longest active streak.
Tyler Rennette has scored three game-winning goals and seven points(6g-1a) during the winning streak. Rennette leads the ECHL with seven shorthand goals and is tied for the lead with 26 goals while ranking second in game-winning goals with seven and tied for fourth in power-play goals with 10. Greg Day has scored the game-winning goal in each of the last two games and has eight points (3g-5a) in the six games. Randy Copley has a four-game goal scoring streak (5g) and a four-game scoring streak (5g-2a).
Alfie Michaud is 3-0 with a shutout, a 1.67 goals against average during the streak and a .950 save percentage during the streak, improving to 6-1-1 with a 2.12 goals against average and a .933 save percentage in eight games. Duane Derksen is 2-0 with a 1.50 goals against average and a .959 save percentage during the streak, improving to 9-7-1 with a 2.92 goals against average and a .905 save percentage.
Peoria leads the ECHL in goals allowed with 2.62 per game while ranking 14th in scoring with 3.27 goals per game. The Rivermen and Greenville are tied for the ECHL lead with 11 shorthand goals.
Pee Dee Undefeated In New Year, Moves Atop Southeast Division
Posting wins over Southeast Division rivals Augusta and Florida and Northeast Division foe Trenton, Pee Dee extended its winning streak to six games, remained undefeated in 2003 and moved into first place in the Southeast Division. The Pride has 51 points and is 23-11-5, three points ahead of Florida and six points ahead of Columbia and South Carolina. The Pride began the New Year in third place, five points behind Florida and four points behind South Carolina.
The six-game winning streak is the longest for the Pride since it won eight consecutive games in November of 2001. Pee Dee is tied with Peoria for the longest active winning streak in the East Coast Hockey League. The longest winning streak of 2002-03 is seven games by Toledo (Dec. 14-Jan. 3) and Florida (Dec. 15-31). The Pride has a five-game home winning streak, including 3-0 on its current five-game home stand that continues Tuesday against Columbia and ends on Friday against Columbus.
Pee Dee has not allowed more than 30 shots in its last eight games, including three games with less than 20 shots, and it has lowered its shots allowed to 29.44, third in the ECHL. The Pride ranks fifth in the ECHL in scoring with 3.69 goals per game and is fifth in goals allowed with 2.90 per game.
Matt Reid has scored the game-winning goal in each of Pee Dee¹s last two wins, giving him four game-winners, tying him with rookie Mike Glumac for the team lead. Reid has nine points (5g-4a) during the six games and he leads the Pride with 34 assists and 53 points while ranking second with 19 goals. Greg Schmidt has 10 points (4g-6a) during the winning streak and he is second on the team with 33 assists and 46 points.
Matt Underhill is 3-0 with a 1.67 goals against average and a .930 save percentage in three starts in January while Ron Vogel is 3-0 with a 2.00 goals against average and a .915 save percentage.
Tripp Becomes 206th In NHL
John Tripp became the 206th former East Coast Hockey League player to advance to the National Hockey League when he made his debut in the New York Rangers 5-1 win on Wednesday against Carolina. Tripp registered his first NHL point at 13:33 of the second period, assisting with Mark Messier on a power-play goal by Eric Lindros. He recorded his second NHL point at 18:18 of the second period, assisting with Boris Mironov on Jamie Lundmark¹s first NHL goal. Tripp played parts of five seasons in the ECHL with Roanoke, Johnstown and Pensacola.
Columbus Takes Season-Low 10 Shots
Columbus took 10 shots in its 2-1 loss to Columbia on Tuesday, one shy of the East Coast Hockey League record held by Arkansas, who took nine shots against Greenville on March 7, 2000. The Cottonmouths took five shots in the first period before managing only one shot in the second period, tying the ECHL season low for shots in the second period, and four shots in the third period. The Cottonmouths previously set the ECHL season low for shots in the third period with one in a 2-1 loss at Florida on December 31, finishing the game with 25 shots.
League Sees Season-High Seven Hat Tricks In Four Days
There were a season-high seven hat tricks scored last week in the East Coast Hockey League. The previous high for hat tricks in a week was six during the week of November 11-17 when all six were scored in two days with three on November 15 and three on November 16.
Last week produced three consecutive days with two hat tricks beginning on Tuesday with Florida¹s 10-5 win against Pensacola that saw Florida¹s Joe Blaznek pick up his second hat trick of the season and Pensacola¹s Gregor Baumgartner pick up his first. It marked the third time that a game has produced two hat tricks and the second time with opposing players each registering a hat trick. Greenville¹s Mikko Sivonen and Columbus¹ Andrew Long each scored a hat trick in Columbus¹ 5-3 win on November 15. The first game to produce two hat tricks was November 2 when Greensboro¹s Chris Bell and Pete Gardiner each scored three goals.
Richmond¹s Lars Pettersen and Toledo¹s Darryl Bootland each scored three goals on Wednesday and Charlotte¹s David Evans and Trenton¹s Adam Edinger each had a hat trick on Thursday. Greensboro¹s Olaf Kjenstad picked up the seventh hat trick of the week on Friday. Blaznek, Edinger and Kjenstad have each scored two hat tricks tying them for the ECHL lead with Richmond¹s David Brosseau, Cincinnati¹s Joe Cardarelli, Greensboro¹s Jay Murphy and Columbia¹s Rejean Stringer.
There have been 12 multiple hat trick days in 530 games in 2002-03. There have been two three hat trick days and 10 two hat trick days. There were 17 multiple hat trick days in 1,044 games in 2001-02, including four hat tricks on February 15. There were 13 days with two hat tricks and three days with three hat tricks.
Greensboro leads the ECHL with eight hat tricks, accounting for 17 percent of the 47 games with three goals, including a four-goal game by Sam Ftorek on December 3. The Generals scored four hat tricks in five games in November after not scoring a hat trick since January of 2001. Columbus has four hat tricks while Columbia, Cincinnati, Richmond and Trenton have each scored three hat tricks. Arkansas, Augusta, Baton Rouge, Dayton, Johnstown and Wheeling have not scored a hat trick.
Charlotte, Greenville and Reading have each surrendered an ECHL high five hat tricks while Wheeling has allowed four. Columbus, Roanoke, South Carolina and Trenton have each allowed three hat tricks while Florida, Greensboro, Jackson and Pensacola have each allowed two. Baton Rouge, Cincinnati, Lexington, Louisiana, Mississippi, Peoria and Toledo have not allowed a hat trick.
