Week in review

Fort Wayne, IN --- The Komets took 3 wins and 6 points in games played last week to move into 3rd place in the Western Conference. Fort Wayne extended their lead over 4th-place Flint to 4 points with 2 weeks and 7 games remaining in the Komet's 50th anniversary season. Post-season play is slated to start with a best-of-5 first round the week of April 1st.

Wednesday night the Komets stopped the visiting Knoxville Speed 6-1. It was the last meeting of the season with the Komets taking the series 3-1-1. There were 6 different goal scorers for the Komets as Brent Gretzky dished 3 assists for a 3-point outing. Doug Teskey earned the win for Fort Wayne stopping 16 of 17 Knoxville shots.

Friday the Komets ambushed the Generals from Flint 3-2 in a shootout. Michel Massie scored both Komet goals in regulation, his 20th and 21st of the season, as Teskey made 16 saves in regulation and stopped 3 of 4 Generals in the shootout for the win. Peter Cermak, Dustin Virag and Chad Grills each scored in the extra frame to give the Komets a 3-0-0 record vs Flint on coliseum ice this season.

The Komets traveled to Missouri for a Saturday night affair and came up short 6-2 snapping a 3-game road win streak. Virag and Kevin Bertram each scored for the Komets. Goalie Martin Fillion registered the loss with 31 saves on 37 shots to snap his personal 4-game win streak.

Sunday the Komets returned to Fort Wayne to host the Asheville Smoke. The game was delayed 1 hour, 26 minutes due to a freon leak. A sell-out crowd of 7,874 was rewarded for it's patience with 4-2 Komet win. Teskey earned his 3rd straight win making 25 saves on 27 shots. It also was his 23rd win of the season, just 3 shy of his Komet UHL record 26 wins set last year. Severson posted his 3rd straight game winner as Jim Logan, Gretzky and Cermak also netted goals. It was the last meeting of the season with Asheville as the Komets were 1-0-2 in the series.

WEDNESDAY'S GAME VS ELMIRA POST-PONED.....the Komet's home game originally scheduled for this Wednesday, March 20th against Elmira has been post-poned in order to give the coliseum time to repair the freon leak. The rescheduled date is expected to be announced later today or tomorrow.

Plenty of good seats remain on sale for Komet home games. Tickets can be purchased at the Coliseum Ticket Office and online at www.ticketmaster.com.

Komets first to hit 200,000.....the Komets were the first UHL team this season to top the 200,000 mark in attendance with a crowd of 4,832 for Wednesday's 6-1 win over Knoxville. The Komets are 2,404 shy of last season's total attendance (215,236) and should top that mark at this Friday night's home game against Flint. The sellout crowd of 7,874 attending Sunday's 4-2 home win over Asheville was the 5th full house this season in Fort Wayne.

Big Pluses.....defenseman Kevin Schmidt leads the Komets with +31 and veteran Chad Grills leads Komet forwards with a +15. The Komet UHL record for plus/minus in the regular season is +28 set by Milt Mastad (99-00) and Frederic Bouchard (00-01).

Ironman Schmidt.....defenseman Kevin Schmidt is the only Fort Wayne player to have appeared in all 67 Komet games. The Komets have not had a player appear in every regular season game since joining the UHL in 1999.

Cermak hits 200.....Peter Cermak registered his 200th career point (all in the UHL) with his first assist of the game Sunday, March 17 in the Komets 4-2 win over the visiting Asheville Smoke. Cermak had a 3-point night scoring a goal and adding 2 assists.

Milestones ahead.....Peter Cermak has 98 career goals (all UHL) and has skated 299 UHL games.....Derek Gauthier has netted 192 career goals.

Komets transactions.....Komets acquired winger Craig Desjarlais in a trade for cash with the Knoxville Speed prior to the trade deadline last Wednesday afternoon, March 13.

SCAN Duck Migration Friday.....in the tradition of the SCAN Duck Race, Komet fans will have a chance to help Stop Child Abuse & Neglect this Friday night, March 22, when the Komets host Missouri at 7:35. Fans will be able to purchase a paper duck at the game and fly it towards targets on the ice for a chance to win prizes. Proceeds go to SCAN.

See Komets history at the library....the Komet Anniversary Exhibit, a historical look at the Fort Wayne Komets in pictures and memorabilia, is on display at the Allen County Public Library downtown Fort Wayne at 900 Webster Street. The exhibit is open to the public during regular business hours for the remainder of March, and features hundreds of items from Eddie Long's 1952 team jacket to the current Komet 50th anniversary jersey.
